HAVING FUN and raising Opinions sought on waste - Public input is sought from Peninsula residents on the Capital Regional District’s solid waste disposal policies at an open house in Sidney this Thursday. The open house will run from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sanscha Hall annex, off Beacon Avenue and the Pat Bay Highway in Sidney, and will give residents a chance to meet the CRD Solid Waste Man- agement Plan commissioner Doug MacKay, CRD spokesman Jack Fry said. MacKay will spend the next four months reviewing the CRD’s three-year solid waste disposal plan, Fry explained. Among issues of concern to Peninsula residents is the proposed filling-in of Heal Lake with solid wastes, in the Highland Land Digg. trict. Heal Lake is one of three lakes that drain into Tod Creek. Making the small lake a landfill would have a damaging environ- mental impact on Tod Creek’s fragile ecosystem, environmental- ists argue. The open house will aggo hear the public’s views on the disposaide 3s, of toxic wastes and on the fate of the Hartland Avenue Landfill, Fry said. —8, House burns About $10,000 worth of damage was sustained by. a North Saanich house in a fire, Thursday morning. North Saanich volunteer fire chief Terry Towle said the house, at 11175 Woodpecker Place, was still under construction and was unoccupied when the fire started. Spontaneous combustion of rags TENDER used to apply linseed oil to win- dow frames on the second floor of the building was the likely cause of the fire, Towle said. : The fire department was alerted about the blaze by a neighbor at about 8:20 a.m., he said. The property, which is near - Land’s End Road, had been on fire for several hours before the fire department responded to the call and quickly doused the flames, he added.
