I feel Jones is not aware of all the facts. _ The facts are political, economic and humanitarian. The political facts are that in 1983 the Sidney Council expropri- ated part of the War Memorial Park to build what has been described as the most expensive piece of road in Canada, the Bevan Avenue link. Outraged members of the Memorial park Society spear- headed a campaign to prevent the re-election of that council and succeeded. Mayor Sealey was deteated in 1983. After her re-election in 1985 the Memorial Park was made subject to municipal taxes. An action that I, as an alderman, foolishly sup- At the public meeting held in Saanich last year concerning the overpass at Beacon, the question was asked ““Why Beacon first, - when Highways statistics show that other parts of the Pat Bay are E far more dangerous?” * The answer was “Because Sid- « ney asked for it.” Political pres- - - sure was also present at that meet- » ing with two aldermen and the _ Mayor speaking at length at our | public meeting in support of the ; project. We even had a town employee, _ who does not live in Sidney, _ pleading for the overpass. One of the economic facts is that "in response to a question from me, the late Alex Fraser, then Minister of Highways, wrote that one of the reasons for selecting Beacon Ave- nue prior to such terrible hazards such as Elk Lake etc. was quote: ~ “Because of difficult appropria- , tion problems in those areas’: unquote. In other words it is easier to _ appropriate a war memorial than a garage, especially with the support - of the mayor. On the humanitarian issue, we - must eliminate the real hazards of the Pat Bay. An overpass should be built at Beacon Avenue only when other and much more dangerous death spots on our Pat Bay highway are made safe, really safe. Is Mr. Jones suggesting that more tragedies should occur at other more dangerous parts of the Highway in order to complete the destruction of a War Memorial Park? Just the facts Bob! Perhaps the parents feel it is unsafe for them to walk or cycle because of other drivers who 9 If parents believe it is necessary (and not just convenient) to drive their children to school, there is no valid excuse for speeding. The article gave an obvious reason for speeding: “to get the kids to school on time.” Perhaps it is being in a rush: perhaps it is simply not believing that speed limits serve a purpose. Regardless of the reason; parents Continued on Page Al0 Editor: I was angry and disgusted after reading that the police found such a high incidence of speeding in school zones and that “almost all the violators were parents.”’ (The Review, Sept. 12) Why are parents driving their children to school in the first place?
