News . TeReview Wednesday, August 29, 1990 __ Ag Traps nab gypsy moths near airport Agriculture Canada’s war against gypsy moth infestation has moved onto the Saanich Peninsula. Traps set in the area have col- lected about 80 moths in the past few weeks, with most captured near the airport and in Ardmore. Agriculture Canada is now try- ing to find the source of the infestation. “It’s definitely out there,” said Agriculture Canada program offi- cer Isabel Verzosa. A single gypsy moth caterpillar can destroy a square foot of leaves every 24 hours. Eggs are laid in masses of 500 or more eggs. In eastern Canada and the east- er United States, gypsy moth infestations have defoliated acres of trees. Spraying may be required to eradicate the moths but public information meeting will be held before any spraying program is held, Verzosa said. Agriculture Canada has identi- fied and eradicated infestations in Vancouver, Fort Langley, Cour- tenay, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Clin- ton, Kamloops, Colwood and Point Roberts. After six moths were found in North and Central Saanich last fall, Agriculture Canada distri- buted 900 traps throughout the north Peninsula. The traps are orange cardboard boxes containing a sticky surface to catch the insects. A pheromone strip bearing the scent of a female moth draws the flying male moths to the trap. FEMALE SCENT draws male gypsy moths to the Agriculture Canada traps. About 900 of the orange cardboard traps have been set on the Peninsula. Rain gauge goes waterless Forty days without rain prompted an unusual statement from the standard rain gauge at the’ Victoria Airport weather office compound, according to weather services supervisor Jim Steele. “No rain had caressed my open mouth since July 6,” the weather gauge told Steele. “Finally, on Aug. 16, a brief rain shower passed overhead and pro- vided me with a drink.” A day after Steele issued the weather gauge’s comments, the Past fire chief died Sunday PAST SIDNEY FAIRE CHIEF Hugh Loney died Sunday night in his Sicamous home aft the age of 62. Loney, a long- time employee of Mitchell and Anderson lumber yard in Sidney, joined the Sidney volunteer fire department in 1954. He was chief from 1966 until 1978 ana remained with the volunteer department until 1981. Peninsula was hit with a day-long downpour. The weather gauge noted long dry spells of 30 days or more have occurred at the Victoria Airport 18 times since weather keeping started in 1940. The 40-day stretch is the third- longest dry spell on record. The longest dry spell was 53 days in 1986 followed by 42 days in 1987. Adult moths emerge in mid- summer and fly until mid- September. Females lay the eggs in the mid to late summer. The eggs hatch into caterpillars the following spring. Caterpillars feed for six to eight weeks, then enter the pupae stage for 10 to 14 days, after which the adult moth emerges. In the caterpillar stage, the lar- vae feeds on deciduous trees or on any available vegetation. The moth has no natural ene- mies in North America. Attempts to import the species which keep the moth in check in Europe have been unsuccessful. Verzosa said Agricultural Can- ada will be attempting to find egg masses to halt the spread of the moths. The masses look like cream- colored chamois, are roughly the size of a quarter and are usually found on the underside of trees and shrubs, buildings, equipment and vehicles.
