Cowichan style knitted sweaters, bags, gloves, hats, toques and pon- chos come from the four Peninsula Teserves and from reserves near Duncan and Ladysmith. The La Fortune family produce silkscreen T-shirts and sweat shirts using designs by Doug La Fortune, Francis La Fortune and Tom La Fortune. Riko Underwood and Lexi Underwood produce prints and original drawings for the store. There is silver jewelry and bead work from area crafts people plus stone-set silver jewelry from a reservation near Gallup, New Mexico. A year of planning and work went into the store before it opened on February 28. Bob Pelkey constructed most of the building last summer and both Bob and Candee finished the inside of the store. A friend pro- vided a professional quality paint job. They also spent a year collecting work for the store. Now they get people coming in offering their work, Calvo said. Many of the talented crafts peo- ple who sell through the store are relatives or friends of store owners Bob Pelkey and Candee Calvo. “We give them their highest price,” Calvo said, explaining that some non-native outlets pay little _ for the crafts and then sell the «work at a 200 to 400 per cent mark-up. Pelkey and Calvo pay the asking price for crafts and accept a lower mark-up, so the crafts person gets 50 per cent or more of the asking price. “People are becoming aware that our prices are competitive and are tax-free,” Calvo said. Located on the Tsawout Reserve beside the road leading to the KOA campground, the store is patro- nized by visitors and by local residents. A sign on the Pat Bay _ Highway also directs people to the Store.
