Competing at Szekesfehervar | in Hungary, Soellner was pleased with his performances in the five-event sport but said the competition was dominated by a very powerful Hungarian contingent. Bowler wins Title Bill Young of the Central Saanich Lawn Bowling Club won the South Vancouver Island Lawn Bowling Associa- tion annual men’s novice sin- gles title recently. He narrowly defeated Vern McBeth of the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club by 15-13 at the Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club #ioumament. Players needed for field hockey A Vancouver Island Division 3 ladies field hockey league team, the Kapetyns, is looking for new players to beef up a depleted team now preparing for upcoming league action. Holding sets record at Ironman PENTICTON — Super-fit Peninsula athlete Monty Holding won first-place in the Masters’ Division at the Ironman Canada Tnathlon in Penticton, Sunday. Holding completed the grueling course in a time of 10 hours, two minutes, 50 seconds, eaming 34th place overall among a field of about 900 competitors, race offi- cials said. Holding’s strong performance gave him a new course record in the 45-49 year age group at the world-renowned triathlon. The event consisted of a 2.4- mile swim in Okanagan Lake and a 112-mile cycle race from Pentic- ton south past Oliver and back Winner goes The winner of the Tenth Annual Sidney Mixed Slowpitch League’s Labor Day Tournament will have the chance to compete in the Slowpitch National champion- ships next year near Winnipeg. Organizers said 24 teams are expected in the three-day tourna- ment which begins Saturday at the league’s brand new facilities at Blue Heron Park, off McDonald Park Road in North Saanich (east of the highway). But slowpitch isn’t the only thing going on at the new facility. There will also be horseshoe pitching, volleyball, tug-of-wars, and other sports related activities. The Peninsula slowpitch team sponsored by Ron’s Disposal- Mixed Nuts are favorites to win the national qualifier event and travel to Beausejour, Man., for Slowpitch National’s Mixed Recreational division championship, league president Paul Noyce said. Finals are scheduled for Mon- again. The third event involved a 26.2- mile marathon from Okanagan Lake to Skaha Lake and back again. Of 898 starters, 853 fin- ished. The top woman competitor from the Peninsula was Brenda Caims, with a sixth-place finish in the 40-44 year-old age group. Her time was 13 hours, 16.30 minutes, which placed her 641st overall. The top woman competi- tor, Erin Baker of Boulder, Col., finished in a 9:05.28 time for first place. His 520th overall placing was posted with a time of 12 hours, 32.06 minutes. The race winner was profes- sional athlete Ray Browning of Escondido, California, who fin- ished in a time of 8:32:52. Officials said the majority of competitors were not from Canada as the event is a qualifier for the Hawaiian Ironman competition, Oct. 6. The next event for Holding will be the International Short Course triathlon event in Orlando, Fla., Sept. 15.
