Mary and I were standing on the
comer of Douglas and Pandora a
day or two ago when two pigeons
sauntered across Douglas, picking
their way circumspectly, but
against the red light which we
were waiting to change to green.

“Geez, some pigeons are stu-
pid!” the bloke standing next to
me exclaimed.

“T don’t suppose pigeons here
are often faced with the problem
that they have in Calgary, Edmon-
ton and New York, Mary said.

“What do you mean?”

“Peregrine falcons.”

“Very seldom, I’d say. I don’t

think that they figure in the food

chain of peregrines here, statisti-
cally.”

“Not like ducks and fish do in
bald eagles, then ? Nor snowshoe
hares in the lynx ?”

“No, the dependence of lynx
populations upon numbers of
snowshoe hares is a classic, well
documented relationship over
many years.”

“You mean the way in which
snowshoe hares increase rapidly
over a period of about 10 years,
with the lynx numbers just a step
behind ?”

“Yes, remember the scads of
snowshoes that we saw in some
places this spring. Sometimes a
dozen at a time along the roadside,
hopping off in every direction?”

“Sure, and all the small aspen
poplar trees stripped of their bark
by the rabbits, maybe from the
ground to a height of two or three
feet. Miniature forests of small
white-trunked saplings. It must
have taken a great many snow-
shoes to do all that. Boy, they
surely must know how to repro-

“They know their multiplication
tables all right . No family plan-
ning or contraceptives in the world
of rabbits. They can go from very
few to millions and millions in
only ten years or a little less.”

“And the lynx increase almost
along with them as a result of the
tremendous supply of fresh, read-
ily obtained meat in the form of
hares?”

“Right.”

But what causes the snowshoes
to die off by the millions?”

“There are many causes. Dis-
ease, roundworms, flatworms,
great increases in the numbers of
their predators, inability to repro-
duce, behaviour, etc. I know a
researcher who has been working
on this problem for 40 years.

“He tells me that he has islo-
lated some 35 contributing causes
of the tremendous decline but does
not feel that he yet has the com-
plete picture.

“Tt’s a problem that seems to be
particularly typical of the temper-
