Symphony's next 50 years to start with bang Aug. 11 ymphony music isn’t only for socialites — for 50 years, the Victoria Symphony has performed for local music-lovers. On Saturday, August 11, at 7 p.m., however, Victorians will hear avery special Conducted by Peter McCoppin, the symphony will present a free public concert from a barge ‘stage’ anchored in Victoria Harbour, facing Belleville and Government Streets. The concert, a celebration of the orchestra’s 50- year history, includes classical favorites such as Rossini’s William Tell Overture, a Strauss Waltz and Polka, Finlan- dia and Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. There are plans to fire a battery of cannons, set up on Ship’s Point, as required in the Overture and light and sound equipment, both on and off-shore, will guarantee a spectacular show. The Symphony Splash is free, and the Legislature lawns and Belleville Street (which will be closed during the event) will provide good viewing areas.
