‘Woman convicted [ of cheque forgery fg Lh Gourts A North Saanich woman who altered a Pauquachin band social development program cheque was found guilty of forgery in Sidney provincial court July 26. Ramona Williams, 36, received the $80 cheque on October 7, “@1988, a band officer testified. When the canceled cheque was returmmed to the band, the amount p. had been changed to $180, the band officer said. Williams was told about the discrepancy and advised to speak to the band council about restitu- tion. But by August, 1989, she had not contacted the band council, the band officer said. The cheque was tumed over to police later that year. An RCMP expert said examina- tion of the cheque showed the amount had been altered from $80 A Victoria man who gave police a false name when stopped in ‘Central Saanich May 11 was fined $300 in Sidney provincial court Thursday after he pleaded guilty to obstructing police. Yearbook used to identify thief A school yearbook served to identify a Victoria youth who stole three packages of cigarettes from a Saanichton grocery store, crown counsel Edward Ormheim said in giaey provincial court Thursday. ~ The 18-year-old youth entered the store shortly before 9:30 p.m. Jan. 27, asked for three packages of cigarettes from the clerk, then ~@irabbed the cigarettes and ran out to a waiting vehicle without pay- ing, Ormheim said. The store clerk remembered the oe as a fellow student, checked the’school yearbook to identify the youth and reported the thief’s name to Central Saanich police. The youth pleaded guilty to theft. The cigarettes were worth $10.65, Ormheim said. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said the youth had no source of income at the time of the theft and decided stealing was the only way to obtain cigarettes. The youth is now working full time and living with a relative in Victoria, McKimm said. “Most people have given up smoking and maybe you should do the same thing,” Judge Stephen Denroche suggested. He fined the youth $100 and ordered him to pay $10.65 restitution. WAREHOUSE FOR RENT HENRY AVE. BUSINESS PARK (2064 HENRY AVE) 1500 sq. ft. plus upstairs office. The best spot in town. A Sidney RCMP officer said he spoke to Williams about the cheque Dec. 20, at which time she admitted changing the cheque and offered to pay restitution. Judge Alan Filmer found Willi- ams guilty of forgery. A second forgery charge, involving a Pau- quachin band social development cheque altered to $551 from $251, was dropped by Crown counsel Edward Ormheim. Defence lawyer Rory Morahan said Williams had problems with alcohol in the past but is now working part-time and supporting a 14-year-old child. Filmer requested a pre-sentence report and remanded the case to Sept. 14 for sentencing. High fine for false name Simon Clayton Beckham, 19, was stopped by police at the Mt. Newton Crossroad and Pat Bay Highway intersection about 11 p.m. Initially, he told police he had no wallet and gave a false name. But Beckham admitted he was lying after the police officer spot- ted a wallet hidden between the seats of the vehicle, crown counsel Edward Ormheim said. Beckham told police he lied about his name because his driver’s licence was invalid. A computer check revealed a B.C.-wide warrant for Beckham’s arrest. In addition, Beckham’s driver’s licence had expired in March. Defence lawyer Steve Perks said Beckham was unemployed at the time of the offence but is now working full-time. The warrant was issued over unpaid restitution arising from a youth conviction for theft. Beckham has since waived the matter to Victoria and is now paying the restitution, Perks said.
