A Brentwood Bay family
received a severe fright last week
after finding a rusty sewing needle
in a loaf of bread.

Brydon Fitzgerald said it’s a
good thing his wife wasn’t hungry,
just bored, when she made a

on native claim of lot

Saanich Tribal Council spokes-
man Philip Paul said a law suit
could be the result of native’s
claim of a lot planned for the
construction of a new middle
school.

The lot at the comer of Gowdy
Road and Stellys Crossroad was
part of the Tsartlip reserve and was
tumed over to the federal govern-
ment to be used for radar tracking
equipment at the outbreak of the
Second World War, Paul con-
firmed.

Since then the lot became the
property of the provincial govern-
ment, which sold the land to the
Saanich School District to build a
replacement for the Mt. Newton
Middle School.

“If they don’t want to sit down
and talk to us we have no recourse
but to go to the courts,’’ Paul said.

He is also concerned about Stel-
lys Crossroad. “The road is very
narrow and already presents prob-
lems in regards to children and
traffic,” Paul said.

He anticipates problems widen-
ing the road because of limited

road allowance on the Central
Saanich side. “The only way they
can come is in the Indian’s direc-
tion.”

Paul wrote letters to the Saanich
School District superintendent of
schools and Central Saanich May-
or Ron Cullis about the Saanich
Tribal Council’s position on the
Gowdy Road lot.

“So far we haven’t heard a
response from them,” he said.
“We're going to push for our
claims because we have been
unjustly treated.”

But Paul discounts the notion

“We've never approved of using
violence to achieve the goals of the
Saanich people,” Paul said. ““We

were pushed into the position
