Tax questioned Victoria Airport has its own police force, fire fighting unit and sewer system — so why does North Saanich collect municipal taxes, asked Robbins Parking gen- eral manager Walter Jackson in a » letter to North Saanich council. Jackson noted the firm was pay- ing $25,230.94 in property taxes for the 650 car parking lot at the airport. Pointing out the airport provides its Own services and has no need of schools, Jackson asked, “What then does the District of North Saanich do for this huge pay- ment.” In a draft letter to Jackson, Mayor Linda Michaluk said $7,339.98 of the total tax bill is for municipal taxes. The remainder 1s for school, regional district, hospi- tal, B.C. assessment authority and @ Municipal finance authority taxes. Michaluk said the District of North Saanich provides back-up fire fighting for the airport force and also covers fire protection for the airport between midnight and 6 a.m. daily. The district also maintains many of the roads leading to the airport, Michaluk added. “You may be pleased to know that, during a recent survey, it was found that North Saanich has one of the lowest tax rates in the province of B.C,” she wrote. Council voted July 23 to send Michaluk’s letter to Jackson.
