The cultural heritage of British
Columbia’s native peoples will be
shared this weekend at the First
Peoples Festival, slated for August
4, 5 and 6 at the Royal B.C.
Museum and Thunderbird Park.

carver Doug La Fortune of the
Tsawout Band.

Sampson will conduct the open-
ing prayer at the opening ceremo-
nies Saturday at 11:30 a.m. He is
also one of the guest speakers who
will share stories in the carving
studio, Thunderbird Park.

La Fortune is one of 25 native
artists invited to participate in the
festival, demonstrating and selling
his crafts in front of the museum’s
main entrance.

The event also includes canoe

dancing and children’s activities.

The Saanich Thunderbird Sin-
gers, Alert Bay Dancers, Hunt
Family Dancers, Within the Thun-
derbird Dancers and Andean
music performed by Pepe Men-
doza are featured during the festi-
val.

Victoria Smith will present a
slide presentation on exploring
Vancouver Island’s west coast in
an ocean-going dugout canoe.

On Sunday, the Miss Victoria
Native Friendship Pageant will be
held in the Newcombe Theatre.
