day when I was about eight years old. I was too
old to shed tears, but I looked long and hard at
the ice cream down in the dirt, melting in the
sun.

and sat down beside me on the edge of the
sidewalk. We watched the ice cream melt

grubby fist. “I’m going to get a
cone. You can come with me.”

I started to get up but he
pulled me down. “Not yet,” he
said. “Don’t you know any-
thing?”

Cones were five cents, dishes 10 cents. The
10 cent scoops came in small metal dishes with
paper liners, each scoop adorned with a single
wafer, sliced on the diagonal and stuck into the
ice cream.

Not wanting to part with 10 whole cents at
one crack, we usually asked for cones. Mrs.
Stander, a tall square-jawed woman had dish-
ing up ice cream down to an art. She would dip
the scoop into warm water, reach down and
expertly scoop out exactly what she deemed to
be anickle’s worth. Then she scraped the scoop
across the lip of the container to make certain
that no one got a penny’s worth extra. The
scoop of ice cream was as perfect as if someone
had cut a ball in half, and it balanced just as
precariously on top of the cone.

We waited. Finally the
screen door of the ice cream
parlor opened and Mrs. Stander came out,
hatted and gloved, purse in hand.

“Now,” said my companion, pulling me to my
feet. I followed him into the cool depths of the
confectionary. Mr. Stander was behind th®
counter. He liked children and exchanged
banter with my new friend as he filled our
cones. I watched in awe as he packed the ice
cream down into the cones and then topped
them with a fully loaded scoop. By my calcula-
tions, they were each worth over 15 cents. Mrs.
Stander would have a fit.

Poor woman; it seemed she was a creature of
habit, her comings and goings right @
schedule and totally predictable, a fact not lost
on the children of the neighborhood.

It gave us a definite edge.
