CLASSIFIEDS /News Ceniral Saanich Days start Three fun-filled days of excite- ment start Saturday in Centennial Park on Wallace Drive as the annuai Central Saanich Days cele- bration begins. Central Saanich Lions club organizer Randy Street said spe- cial events designed to bring through some agricultural flavor are guaranteed to satisfy families. A petting zoo featuring a variety of farm animals will be set up with the assistance of local 4-H clubs. There will also be free hay rides through the park and the neighbor- ing area, Street said. Live entertainment by Country Cache and one other live band will entertain expected crowds of peo- ple Saturday and Sunday afternoon and again on Monday. There is also an open-air darts tournament for mixed teams, a fish pond for children, games of chance and a bingo hall. Each day will begin with the traditional pancake breakfast, served up hot and piping by Lions Club members. A daytime conces- sion will serve a selection of hot food and cold refreshments. All proceeds from Central Saa- nich Days events organized by the Lions Club are returned to the community, Street said. “Everything we make goes back into the community but most events are free,” Street said. Continued from Page A10 from the compilation of statistics tesulted in vast, conscientious research being carried out by doc- tOrs, Scientists nutritionists and other experts into the eating habits of the entire world. Every single enquiry carried out by unbiased researchers, which means those NOT commissioned by groups who profit from the consumption of dairy products and animal flesh, has shown that the high intake of meat and dairy products in North America can be directly correlated to the high incidence of cancer and cardiovas- cular disease in our society. One report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute showed a number of stud- ies done during the 70s pointed out that in every society with a high meat intake a correspond- ingly high incidence of colon can- cer was evidenced. There is a lot of other evidence and unpréjudiced information available out there. Perhaps k.d. lang read some of this material before she agreed to do the anti-meat advertisement. Clearly the manager of the Can- adiar Cattlemens Association is a non-reader, or more likely reads only the biased misinformation put out by his own organization. You will have noticed that I have not touched on the animal rights factor in this ugly equation. I certainly feel, as does k.d. that this is as important for us to consider. My reason for not doing so is that it is important that people know about the harrowing pain- ridden lives that most of the ani- mals we eat live. If they don’t they should check the photographs in John Robbin’s book, Diet for a New America. My concern here is that human lives are at stake because of the misinformation, outright lies and verbal smokescreens put out by the producers of animal flesh and dairy products. The connection between these powerful industries, the destruc- tion Of tropical rainforests, the pollution of our water, and the sickness in our own bodies is very carefully tabulated in the just men- tioned book. One last point the manager of the CC.A. would do well to remember, prejudice is a great labor-saving device, it allows us to have opinions without recourse to the facts. And thank you k.d. lang, you're a capital woman. Derek R. King Sidney \\ BRENTWOOD TOWER APTS. 1236 Verdier Ave., ES =) Brentwood Bay, B.C. . = yf VOS 1A0 SENIORS BUILDINGS: ONE & TWO BDRM.
