Community Pottery preserves endangered species A little help for endangered species is coming from clay. Reproductions of Canada’s endangered species by local arti- san Muriel Sibley are featured at Maples Gallery in Central Saanich until August 17. During the show, bids will be taken on a sculpture with proceeds going to the World Wildlife Fund. “We are so used to thinking of our country as an Eden-like wil- derness that we forget how we threaten the rest of life here,” Sibley* said. “Few as we are, and thinly spread, we are already wreaking havoc on this land.” Her work ranges from reproduc- tions of. the tiny stickle-backs of Vancouver Island to the beluga whales of the St. Lawrence seaway. Pucci and Ruth Duckworth. Her interest in pottery started when she was eight and attended a chil- dren’s art group in a church base- ment. She recalls making clay animals as a child. “Throughout high school and university years I leamed to make pots — hand-built and wheel- thrown, and I still make them, but I also still make animals for my own best enjoyment. “Perhaps it is the sense of a consciousness very different from human which intrigues me; per- haps it is a sympathy for the vulnerability of other species as humanity progresses, destroying and plundering as we go,” Sibley explained. She does not create perfect to Convey the feeling of the ani- mal, which she describes as “a sense of lizardness or cougamess to those who see them.” She also tries to create sculp- tures which have utilitarian uses as Planters, pots or bird-baths. “I love the idea of art being fully integrated with practical life,” she said. Married with five children, she has lived in Victoria since 1971. She taught pottery through Camo- sun College at Fort Street Cera- mics from 1972 to 1974 and in her own studio from 1974 until 1984. She joined in a group show at the Beatrice Jumpson Gallery in the spring of 1988 and contributed V4 to a two person show at the Maples Gallery last summer.
