The regiment association held its annual reunion in Sidney over the week- Reunion marched through Sidney It was the best reunion to date for the South Saskatchewan Regi- ment Association, president Les Moore of North Saanich was told repeatedly last weekend by the over 100 people who attended the event. “They were really tickled with Sidney,” he said. He was told by many that Sidney should host the reunion again. “We'll try and get it back,” Moore said. A highlight of the weekend was a parade of former regiment mem- bers, accompanied by a pipe band and a color party, through Sidney and to the cenotaph for a Remembrance ceremony. The group had many comrades to remember. The South Saskat- chewan Regiment mobilized for the second World War in Septem- ber 1939 and, after training in England, landed at Dieppe in August 1942. Casualties from that first battle were high. Of the 523 members who landed at Dieppe, 19 officers and 321 other ranks were killed. The first Victoria Cross awarded to a Canadian was presented to Lt. Col. Cecil Merritt following the battle. Sidney Cenotaph. After more training, the regiment again sailed for France, landing on July 6, 1944 and fight- ing through France, Belgium and Holland until the regiment crossed into Germany in February, 1945. Part of the regiment was still moving through Holland in April 1945 when word was received that prisoners in a concentration camp at Westerbonk, 75 miles away, were to be killed at 10 am. Apmil 13 by the retreating German forces. The regiment’s A company marched through the night to reach the camp and captured the camp April 12, saving over 900 Jewish and political prisoners. Local resi- dent Bob Morrow was serving with A company and still recalls the gratitude of the freed prisoners. When the cease fire came May 5, the regiment was at Ofen Air- port. By then the South Saskat- chewan Regiment had lost 475 men. There were 1212 men wounded and 146 taken as prison- ers Of war.
