Page M16 July 25, 1990. This Week PRIME TIME Train travel is only a memory rowsing through a book store the other day, looking for a good read, I came across a book on cross country train travel. I picked it up. I was looking forward to renew- =Goldenred= By IVY KENT ing happy memories of my own transcontinental jour- neys behind the big iron hors- es. I was disappointed. I have Ill Take The Train by Ken Liddell and enjoy it. I have fond memories of train travel and I love this wonderful country in which we live. Ob- viously, this author had a different outlook. I was amazed that he was able to find so many of his destina- . just the way you have set Then I realized that you find just what you are looking for, and if it so happens that you are looking on the dark side, then what you find will indeed be depressing. didn’t feel up to the dining car, there was also a small cafeteria. From the parlor cars, the panoramic views were spectacula~. And if one Ontario, there was a knock on my door. My neighbor asked if the girls were with me. And that was where we Even the people he inter- viewed seemed to hold less than favorable opinions about the country. But that can be explained by one simple truth . . that people respond to you them up to respond. We see that often enough in daily living. If you approach others with a negative atti- tude, then that will surely be reflected. I'm sad to see that train travel in Canada is becoming a thing of the past. I’m sad that the powers that be had not the foresight to be able to turn things around instead of throwing in the towel. If, just across the border, they were able to make Amtrak viable, and very successful, why in the world had we not the savvie to do the same with our passenger train travel? Crossing Canada behind those big locomotives was an experience like no other. It Was gracious travel. Roo- mettes were private and com- fortable, the porter only a ring away, the diningroom service left nothing to be desired, and felt like company, there were people to talk with all along the coaches. A young woman with two little girls occupied the roo- mette opposite mine. She was on her way to Halifax to meet her in-laws. Her husband was in the services, and the chil- dren had yet to see their grandparents. The children, barely school age, were excit- ed about the prospect. One afternoon, as we were crossing the rugged pre-- I thought I might know where they were. Two cars down, I had noticed an old lady. This particular coach wasn’t full and she had a double seat. I had stopped for a few words with her the day before. She had boarded just east of Sas- katoon and was going to see relatives south of Montreal. With her ample girth, neat grey braids, and laughing dark eyes, she looked like a wonderful grandmother. And she was doing needlework: found them, sitting quiet as mice, together on the seat facing the old lady, listening to stories about what it was like when she was their age. I'm glad I crossed the coun- try while that type of travel was still available. But above all; I'm thankful that the years haven't changed me, that I still look on everything as an adventure and consid. each new day a gift.
