Summer Games with a stack of medals, proving again the Peninsula has a gold mine of sporting talent. Sprinting sensation Adam Street collected no less than four gold medals, leading local competitors in medals from the Games, held July 12-16 in Prince George. Street, who competed in the Junior Division, ran to victory in the 100-metre and the 200-m sprints, as well as the 400-m race and as part of the 4-X-100-m relay feam. Peninsula Track Club head coach Tom Michell said Street is one of Canada’s most promising young athletes. “For his age group, he’s well ahead of other sprinters. He’s definitely got the talent to become a national team member a few years down the road,” he said. Michell also praised Andrea De Pol, who helped set a new B.C. Summer Games record in the girls’ 4-X-400-metre relay. As a member of the Zone 6 relay team, De Pol also earned a silver medal in the girls’ 800-m race. She displayed fine form at the Games and has the ability to develop into a top-notch athlete, Michell said. In other events at the Games, Paul Bowden made an impressive showing by winning both the C Division singles trapshooting con- test and the handicap trapshooting event. Colin De Wolfe was on the win- ning team in the boys’ 4-X-50-m medley relay. Gina Gregory also won top hon- ors in the womens’ sailboard event. From Brentwood Bay, Brian Fagan won a silver medal and Joe Bell took home the bronze medal in the youth sailing event. Sidney athletes Don Carter and Lyle Wegelin both proved their sharpshooting skills by each earn- ing silver medals in the smallbore — high team aggregate event.
