Hydro poles have already been removed along Beacon west of - Fifth Street. “Irs taken us a little longer than we thought it would,” Apperley said. Rosko is concerned about the amount of time it’s taken. She said that business people were told at a Sidney Association of Merchants meeting last fall the project would = take about three weeks to com- plete. “I cannot get into my business, there’s no warming and it’s not the three week job I was led to believe,’ Rosko said. GOLF Continued from Page Al land was “terrible and an eyesore” and he tried for two years to farm it without any success. “All you can raise on that land is an argument,” Fox said. However, other residents said council would set a “dangerous precedent’? it Morrison was allowed to operate the course on ALR land. Clarence Bolt, a spokesman for the Association for the Protection of Rural Central Saanich, said “the regulations and guidelines will lose their meaning if approval is given for this golf course. “Many tesidents, including me, are opposed to using good agricul- tural land for golf courses — a point supported by both the golf course guidelines and the Official Community Plan,” he added. Bolt said council could face lawsuits if it chose not to apply the golf guidelines to Mormison’s golf course permit application. This would lead to future applic- ants demanding the same treat- ment, he said. Bill Ashwell, chairman of the Association for the Protection of Central Saanich Peninsula, agreed. “Tf you allow any of your guide- lines to be breached by this appli- cation, the door is open . . . If (council) breaks with the princi- ples now, it will come back to haunt you,” he said. Advisory planning commission member Arthur Rowse said Morri- son had acted in a “cavalier man- ner by developing the agricultural site without first obtaining the proper authority.” Tsyecum Indian band spokes- man Floyd Underwood said he’s concemed about potential conta- mination of drainage systems and aquifers in the areas near the golf SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REVIEW EXECUTIVE STYLED RANCHER $259,900 mLs | 2100 sq. ft. of luxury living all on a country 1+ acre lot in North | Saanich and yet very close to downtown Sidney. 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, great family room with woodstove, formal in-ine living room, dining room, impressive entrance, two car garage. We do not want to compromise out basic fishing rights,” he said. Underwood said council should commission an environmental impact study before making a final decision on the fate of the golf course. Bolt said the OCP stipulated no water contamination should be allowed as a result of the construc- tion of golf courses. He added that the OCP made provision for an environmental impact study to be undertaken if a conflict arose between “develop- ers and environmental concems.” Other residents demanded that council allow the golf course to proceed as there was a chronic shortage of affordable courses to play on in the community. Maurice Michell, a farmer who had proposed his own 18-hole golf course in the area, said an “awful lot” of farm land in the municipal- ity is not being farmed and should be put to some other form of use to. benefit the community. Several speakers agreed that the municipality needs a golf course but added it should not be built on ALR land. Brenda May said it sould be very unlikely that Mormison’s land could be converted back to farm- land at a later date. Q HOMELIFE REALTY (Victoria) LTD.
