~ News Red tide hits Peninsula coasial waters The federal Fisheries and Qceans ministry has slapped a ban on shellfish harvesting in some local waters due to a health threat posed by Red Tide. Since July 11, all of Sansum Narrows (which is just north of the Peninsula) and the portion of Sat- ellite Island that is west of Cape Keppel, has been closed to the harvesting of shellfish. Also since the same date, the Saanich Inlet was designated out == TECcenke son reat inside house Three 13-year-old youths were caught inside a house on Cee Sea Place in Saanichton after a neigh- bor watched them enter it. “The quick action of the neigh- bor was what really made it work,” said deputy police Chief George Lawson. A 13-year-old girl from Victoria and 13-year-old boys from Saani- chton and Victoria were found inside the house about 2 p.m. July 5. Nothing was found to be stolen. “We ve had a lot of daylight B and Es and alert neighbors help us put a stop to it,” Lawson said. In another incident about 11:30 a.m. July 4, a woman inside her house in the 1100-block Marchant Road was awakened to find a young man in the bedroom, Cen- tral Saanich police said: The subject fled, the victim called 9-1-1 and three police cruisers quickly responded, Law- son said. Within 40 minutes two youths, 16 and 17 years both from the Central Saanich area, were appre- hended. Tn the afternoon hours two days earlier police responded to com- plaints of two men prowling cars gn an apartment building parking lot in the 7000-block Wallace Drive. While investigating the youths the police patrol did a check of vehicles in the parking lot and found 50 per cent were left unlocked and 25 per cent were left with windows rolled down. “A lot of people are just looking for crimes of opportunity and they're there,” Lawson said. - MONTESSORI CENTER OF SIDNEY Accepting registration for Half & Full Day Pre-school Program for 3 - 5 Year Olds OPENING IN SEPTEMBER 10345 Bowerbank Rd. 656-3214 of bounds for the harvesting of shellfish for the whole area south of a line drawn from Hatch Point to Moses Point. Harvesting crabs has also been prohibited since July 14 in Saani- chton Bay inside a line from Cordova Spit to Turgoose Point. The ban on crab fishing has been implemented to help con- serve the stocks of Dungennes crab and other extensively fished types of crab in the area, federal Fisheries and Oceans ministry officer Ron Kehl said. The restrictions on shellfish har- vesting have been described by ministry notices as “precautionary measures taken as a result of (Red Tide).” Federal Fisheries and Oceans ministry spokesman John Pynn said the threat to shellfish is pri- marily due to the seasonal warm- ing of area waters. “Red Tide is a result of toxins picked up from plankton . . . In the warmer water, nutrient levels increase to feed these micro- organisms,” he said. Typically, organisms that feed off the plankton are most likely to build up high concentrations of Red Tide, he added. Pynn said shellfish like clams, oysters, mussels and scallops pose the greatest threat. Creatures like shrimp, abalone and crabs are not usually affected by Red Tide, he said. Depending on the quantity of poisoned shellfish eaten, humans can experience symptoms ranging from numbness and tingling of the extremities to breathing difficul- ties and temporary paralysis, he said. The toxin is a neuro-toxin that attacks a person’s central nervous system but serious illness is not likely to occur even when large quantities of the toxin have been consumed, he added. A native Indian fisheries adviser. _ §_- iph naralwtic-cheliiich noi — ee ttre ot TauUNS, SOUMT ISTad gS Tribal Council said the ban on shellfish harvesting in the Saanich Inlet would not be a major hard- ship for native Indian fishermen. “Tt’s unfortunate but that’s the work of Mother Nature. We can fish in other areas. “The big problem that we have in the Saanich Inlet is the raw sewage that’s being dumped into the Inlet,” Randy Ginger said. He added that development on the Peninsula is leading to increased pollution of the Inlet and long-term contamination of shell- fish. Library deal needs rewriting North Saanich wants to re- negotiate the deal governing con- trol of the Sidney-North Saanich Tegional library. Monday night, council struck a committee including Ald. Dee Bailin, Mayor Linda Michaluk and administrator Ron O’Genski to meet with Sidney and propose revamping the joint library agree- ment between Sidney and North Saanich. “We are an extremely silent partner in this partnership,” Bailin said. She has met with Sidney and regional library representatives to protest the loss of the Nell Horth meeting room. The library admin- istration wants to use the former public meeting room for adminis- tration and, under a lease agree- ment with Sidney signed last fall, controls use of the building. North Saanich opposed loss of the meeting room and was not successful in changing the situa- tion at the meeting, Bailin said. Bailin hopes the agreement between the municipalities will be changed so that Sidney is no longer the sole caretaker of the building.
