Among local teams competing, the Parkland senior boys squad will prove to be more than a handful for visiting teams, Chan predicted. The Parkland team placed second this year in the Lower Island senior boys’ champion- ships. Also a couple of local volleyball celebrities will be participating in the meet, Chan added. NOW OPEN FRIDAY NITES TILL 9PM SUNDAYS 11AM-4PM Canadian UVic Vikettes star and national team member Lara Mel- ville and former UVic Vikings team captain Mike McCullough will represent the Peninsula, he said. The elderly members of the Ancient Mariners softball team are philosophical about their record of 0 wins and 13 losses in the Sidney Mixed Slow Pitch league. Team spokesman Norm Dunne says the 23-strong squad is made up of male and female players who range in age from 57 to 69 and are all somewhat past their prime as athletes. “We expected to get lots of lickings when we entered the league but we felt the competition would sharpen up our skills and make us a better team,” he said. Dunne ‘stresses the Ancient Mariners play primarily for fun ¥ and for companionship, rather than as league title hopefuls. Nonetheless, the Mariners recently played against a Victoria team for the right to represent Southern Vancouver Island at the B.C. Senior Games in September. Unfortunately, the Sidney team lost two close games to the Coun- try Rose Ramblers by scores of 10-7 and 8-5 and will have to wait © until next year for an opportunity for revenge, Dunne said. In recent games against Cour- tenay and Nanaimo seniors teams, Dunne says the Mariners showed that playing against much younger teams in Sidney’s slow pitch league has made the squad compe- tition-tough. ‘We played those up-Island— teams and beat them handily, which shows we're pretty handy against teams of our own age group,” he said. For a team that was organized only a few months ago by six former members of the Ramblers, the Mariners have bonded into an eager and competitive group of individuals, Dunne says. “Though most of the younger teams run rings around us, we play _ pretty well considering the aches Strong showing at triathlon About 40 Peninsula athletes made a strong showing at the Victoria Youth Triathlon at UVic, June 17. Competing in the 15-16 year- old age group, Kristi Gregory placed second in the girls’ divi- sion, while Andrew Hoffman earned a second place finish in the boys’ division. Not far behind Hoffman were Mike Wilson, who finished fourth, and Ian Brambell, who placed sixth. In the boys’ 13-14 year-old division, lan Denman crossed the finish line as runner-up, while Sarah Thornber earned the same honors in the girls’ stream. Becky Kraitberg placed sixth and Laura Wilson placed eighth. Among the nine and ten year- olds, Carla Willock placed third in the girls’ category, while Matthew Baker was the runner-up in the boys’ category. And in the seven to eight year- old division, Erinne Willock won the girls’ event and Paula Hingley placed eighth. The top Peninsula finisher among the boys was Jesse Devine, who took ninth place. Adding that playing softball is an excellent way for seniors to keep in shape, Dunne says the Mariners play two to three games. a week and also hold practice ses- sions. “We want to keep seniors active and to avoid all the pulled muscles that we seem to get a lot, we'll have to do more workouts, and Start doing sprinting exercises,” he said. Cutting down on the team’s injury list through exercise could be the key to breaking the Marin- ers’ losing streak, Dunne says. There’s a couple of other teams in the league that are beatable and with whom the Mariners have played close games in recent out- ings, Dunne said. But when all is said and done, the important thing is to just get out in the fresh air and under the blue skies and play ball, he said. “You have to really love playing ball to enjoy playing in this league. And doing your best is the best way to have fun and avoid feeling bad if you lose,” he adds.
