TheReview Dapple shade best for house plants Now that the hot weather has arrived, it is time to move your houseplants outside for the sum- mer. YOu won’t believe the differ- ence this makes in their appear- ance! Almost everything could go out but leave gloxinias, streptocarpus and African violets inside, although streptocarpus seems to enjoy being out if you can provide a spot under an overhand where it will get no overhead water. The best place to put plants is out of direct sunshine, in what is called “dappled shade,” meaning under the protecting branches of a deciduous tree. When the wind blows, the leaves move, giving scattered splashes of sunshine to your little dears (or in some cases your BIG dears). We have two of those BIG fellows, and neither “‘himself’’ nor I can budge either of them. We will have to wait until some of our young appear, and whimper a bit until they offer their muscle-power to move them. For the past month we have been waiting to move the planters, the picnic table, and the deck chairs onto our new wooden deck. I’m sure each planter weighs 100 pounds, and the picnic table at least a ton. Finally we decided that no one was going to show up to help, so we would have to figure out how to do it on our own. When we attempt jobs like these we should first make sure our next-door neighbor is out some- where. We give each other so much unwanted advice, and so many unnecessary directions, meanwhile grunting and groaning as we take the strain, that I am sure Jack is rolling around on the floor with a pillow stuffed in his mouth so we won't hear his howls of laughter. lizer shallowly into the soil, before watering it in. I am pleased to see that some of the tomato plants already have small fruit set. One of the Fantastic variety given me by Mr. T. has several tomatoes as large as golf balls. This can’t be considered as boasting, as I didn’t plant the seeds, he did! This reminds me I had a call Cloverdale Paint HOUSE PAINT SALE DATES: JUNE 15-JULY 8 Shop Early for Best S ! from a delightful woman who was concemed that her tomatoes were flowering, although the plants seemed to her to be rather small. She had bought them as Super Fantastic tomatoes, and wondered if they might be a bush type, rather than the tall, staking variety known as Fantastic. I had a good look through the many seed catalogues I seem to collect, and nowhere could I find Super Fantastic. To be on the safe side, I urged her to stake her tomatoes, feeling that even if they turn out to be a bush variety, the fruit is better up off the ground in this slug-ridden country, She was also anxious to know if she should remove those suckers that come between the branches and the main stalk of tomato plants. This seems to me to be a Matter of choice. Most gardeners believe that determinate (bush- type) tomatoes should NOT have these suckers removed, as each sucker will eventually flower and bear fruit. Bush tomatoes usually bear their fruit more-or-less all at once, whereas staking types bear fruit Over a much longer season, and because of this many gardeners remove suckers on these taller fellows, making for fewer, consid- erably larger tomatoes. Hey, does that make sense? It certainly seems pretty complicated: Putting it more simply, do NOT remove suckers on bush tomatoes, but take them off, or leave them on, staking varieties. Removing them will give you fewer larger tomatoes, but leaving them to grow will give you lots of smaller fruit ... er ... is that clearer... or have I just made it worse? An interesting bit of information provided by a nice gentleman is that if you put these suckers in a potting mixture in the shade for a few days they will root. “himself” has planted half a dozen New Zealand tomatoes, plants kindly provided by John Crozier, which brings us to the saturation point. We now have twenty tomato plants, and may well be forced into erecting a market gardening stand in the middle of the front lawn!
