Hole-in-one golf coniest

If you’re a golter who can hit a
moderately sized barn door, try
your hand at hitting a floating
green on the ocean. If you’ve
never swung a club, this is as good
a chance as any to try it.

Not content to have just a hole-
in-one contest in a normal setting,
the imaginative organizers com-
bined the beauty of the Tulista
Park waterfront with the enjoy-
ment of golfing. The result is a
contest for everyone to try hitting a
golf ball out to the floating green.

The first person, young or old, to
make a hole-in-one wins a televi-
sion set. The first 300 players
receive a golf board game in the
July ist and 2nd event.

Organizer Dave Cormier says
clubs are supplied but golfers are
also welcome to bring a favorite
club with them.

“Folks can bring their own
clubs,” he says. For those not
familiar with the sport, Cormier
will be on hand to show the proper
grip and stance. Rubber mats will
provide a level playing surface.

For $2, players get a chance to
swat three balls 60-70 yards out to
the floating green. A flag will
mark the hole. The turf will cover
a layer of sand to help deaden the
ball when it hits the 20 X 24 foot
green.

The 26-inch color television is
donated by Murray Christian of
Island Furniture and will show
golf videos on site. Live taping of
golfers will also be shown.

“This contest will be a lot of fun
for spectators and participants,”
says Cormier, “There’s nothing
like it on Vancouver Island.”

Bingo for fun
and prizes

The Saanich Peninsula Com-
munity Bingo Association was
formed two years ago and has
supported 44 local charities.

Since its beginning the Bingo
Hall, at the corner of Sidney
Avenue and Third Street, has pro-
vided countless hours of pleasure
for those devotees of Bingo who
don’t want to drive into Victoria
whenever they want to play.

In fact, since our manager, Brian
Bossard, joined us about a year
ago his innovative ideas have
increased attendance by nearly 50
per cent, and attracts attendance
from many areas of Greater Vic-
