Stock up on books,
libraries are closing

Local libraries start a three-
week closure this Monday to allow
book labelling and staff training
for the new computerized circula-
tion system.

The Sidney-North Saanich and
Brentwood-Central Saanich
branches of the Vancouver Island
Regional Library system will be
closed from June 18 to July 7.

“We hope that people will bor-

over while we are closed and that
they won’t forget us,” said Mary
Magrega, assistant director for
Support services.

When the library systems re-
opens July 9, the loan period will
be extended from two weeks until
three weeks.

Magrega predicts the computer-
ized system will allow faster and
more efficient service on borrow-
ers’ requests for items which must
be brought in from other regional
libraries,

The computer will also maintain
the files of books on loan or
overdue.

As part of the new system,
borrowers will be issued library

Throughout the system, almost
600,000 items will be inventories
and labelled during the three-week
closure.

In addition, renovations, equip-
ment installation and staff training
for the new system will be done.

“We hope that the temporary
disruptions caused by the System
Conversion Project will be quickly
forgotten and that our users will be
pleased by improvements to the
service that will result,” Magrega
said.

ble from local libraries since May
28.

After July 9, a card will be
required to borrow books.

The library system’s summer
reading program, The Biggest,
Greatest, Most Amazing Reading
Club, starts on July 9.

The free program, which
encourages reading over the sum-
mer vacation, is open to school age
children.
