TheReview Wednesday, June 13,1990 — AT It was treated as just another insignificant space filler by most Canadian newspapers. I think they e missed the point. Last month, the Ottawa (where else?) city council proclaimed June 17 Lesbian and Gay Pride Day. They forgot it was also Fathers” Day. Ss Needless to say, people who didn’t forget it was Fathers’ Day were pretty upset and pressured the council to separate the two celebrations. I don’t know if the separation was performed but for the purpose of today’s discussion, that’s not what's important. I think the Ottawa aldermen inadvertently discovered something that Canada’s senior government should pick up on. I don’t know about you, but I can never remember when special days occur except New Year's Day, and even memories of that day have sometimes been a bit foggy. I think Hallowe’en is more or less in the Fall. I know St. Valentine’s Day is in July, but Easter is & tough to pin down. It hops around the calendar = like a centipede with a hot foot. The problem is not that there are too many special days. The problem is that they are very 2 hard to remember. There is only one solution. Put them where easily confused guys like me can find them. Put them all in December. Christmas is already in December. Let’s give it company — but do it with care. For instance, Lesbian and Gay Pride Day could be more appropriately combined with the Queen’s birth- day. It seems to me that Fathers’, VE, VJ, Remembrance and Thanksgiving Days have much in common. Ground Hog Day, Hallowe’en and all others dealing with animals, birds and insects could be lumped together. Political holidays such as Can- S. ada Day, B.C. Day, Victoria Day and Doris Day could be celebrated December 1. April Fool and Bastille days are related. St. Andrews, St. Patricks, St. George, St. David aN and St. Elsewhere are a natural combination. ‘Many days hath December The list is endless and I leave the rest to you. Hand in your papers after class. They will be graded and your final mark mailed to you - in December. Yes sit, you're absolutely correct. If all the year’s special days are in December, then Decem- ber will be one big month off. This means November will be Panic Shopping Month but everyone will will have a month’s rest to enjoy Christmas, Easter and Birthdays. Did you notice that in the previous paragraph I slipped in the word Birthdays? In the new holiday order, everyone’s birthday will be celebrated on the same day and that day will, of course, be a holiday, Haven’t you always wished your birthday was a national holiday? Sure you have. All greeting cards will be sold the last week of November. The millions of square feet of floor space occupied by those expensive little suckers can, for the rest of the year, be devoted to something useful — like public washrooms. It would be a simple matter for Hallmark and the others to install plumbing under their floors. When the card selling week is over, portable potties and partitions would be set up. People in pain could then quickly find the comfort station instead of spending the better part of a day searching in vain through a mall’s back halls. One final suggestion. Let’s move all wedding anniversaries to the same day. That way I’d be able to remember ours at least once in a while. The only floating day left will be Tax Freedom Day. That’s the day each year The Fraser Institute calculates the average Canadian citizen has finally finished using all his or her earnings to pay income, sales, excise, etc, taxes and can begin to keep some money for him/herself. Tax Freedom Day is now in June but, if the present trend continues, it won’t be too long before we'll be able io celebrate it with all the rest — in December. fo ENINSULA’S aj bucius,' Ey OURIE REALTY INC.
