. Sports “ea. by Mare Davis The Review Sidney residents Kurt Eeg and Mike Wagnor are two career- minded 16-year-olds who have their sights firmly set on a univer- _ sity education. However, their ability to thrive on the challenges of golf tourna- ments, rather than the rigors of college exams, will decide if they are to fulfill their dreams of becoming cleat-soled professional sportsmen. Both Parkland secondary stu- dents, Eeg and Wagnor are two of the best juvenile golfers (16 years- old and under) in Canada and are currently enjoying a very success- ful season on the B:C. high school golf circuit. Two weeks ago, Wagnor succeeded in overcoming rain and poor visibility one day and the pressure of being the tournament’s leader the next to win the B.C. high school golf championship at ® Williams Lake. “T think I played really good. I shot a two-under-par 69 the first day and a 74 the second day. My game was pretty consistent, which was a good feeling,’ Wagnor said. Eeg, who placed fourth among the 110-strong field of competi- tors, said he played well below his best but was happy to finish near the top. Laughing with a touch of embarrassment, the two close friends said they didn’t consider themselves to be keen rivals. “T guess we're going to start to develop some rivalry at some stage, but itll be good for our game,” a grinning Eeg said. “Tt certainly won’t hurt our friendship,’ Wagnor chips in. So far Eeg has had more success = in junior tournaments, but has been playing for six years, while Wagnor picked up a golf club for the first time only four years ago, e golf team coach Scott Clark said. - The law and safety belis B.C.’s safety belt law protects you and your family. Here’s how it works. — Both drivers and passengers must use safety belts while in a ~ vehicle. — In vehicles having separate lap and shoulder belts, use of the complete system is strongly rec- ommended, even though the law only requires use of the lap belt. — Where lap and shoulder har- | nesses are in a fixed combination, > both must be wom. — Drivers are responsible for safety belt use by passengers up to 15 years old. Younger passengers must be secured with safety belts and/or child safety seats, an ICBC press release said. Police officers throughout B.C. may check drivers and passengers for safety belts and/or child safety seats. A violation of any of the regulations outlined makes the offender liable for a fine up to $100. TheReview Wednesday, June 13, 1990 Both have handicaps of three at present, whereas professionals usually play from a handicap of zero, which is known as ‘scratch.’ Last year, Eeg battled it out with players as old as 19 to place second in the B.C. Junior Golf Championship. - Soon after, he was also selected to play on the prestigious Western Canada Juvenile Golf Team. Before becoming the top-ranked junior golfer in the province, Wag- nor last year won the Victoria City Juvenile Golf Tournament, as well as clinching the Victoria high school championship title the same year. In order to develop their win- ning form, the two amiable young- sters practice for about four hours a day at Glen Meadows Golf and Country Club, where they are members. In a usual week the pair could play up to 30 hours — come rain or shine, Wagnor says. Though they are both solid B- average students, they admit that school work and social lives tend to suffer at times due to the amount of time spent competing and practicing, Eeg said. “T suppose we sacrifice our leisure time the most. We can’t laze around with our buddies. We have to get out there and practice,” he said. Once a week, their training schedule takes them to Gorge Vale Golf Course where club assistant professional Scott Dixon helps to sharpen their skills. “Tf they continue their hard work, I think they can go a long way. Their horizons are quite big in terms of golf,” Dixon says. B7 Junior golfers have sights set At Parkland, coach Clark says the young prodigies’ easy-going manner masks a fierce sense of commitment to golf and to the goal of becoming professionals. “They re both tremendously dedicated and have the ability to go on to great things as golfers. “Actually, their laid-back per- sonalities work to their advantage in tournaments because they don’t crack under pressure. They re very cool customers,” he said. ‘Actually, their laid- back personalities work fo their advaniage in fournaments because they don’t crack under pressure. They're very cool cusiomers’ Eeg and Wagnor would like to win golf scholarships from U.S. universities, where they canpre- pare for the Canadian professional golf circuit — the Canadian Tour — which they'll be ready for in about five years. “They’ve got the grades and definitely have the talent to win golf scholarships, which would be ideal preparation for tuming pro,” Clark says. Meanwhile, the two local talents continue to practice their strokes after school each day in prepara- tion for the next big tournaments — the B.C. Junior Golf Champi- onship at Chilliwack in July and the Canadian Junior Golf Champi- onship at Saskatoon in August.
