North Saanich backs inlet society

Plans by the Saanich Inlet Pro-
tection Society to preserve the
Saanich Inlet as a marine park
were endorsed by North Saanich
council after a presentation by
society member Jim Gilbert.

Council agreed to write the
assistant deputy minister, Cana-
dian Parks, Environment Canada,
backing the preservation of the
inlet. Council also agreed to notify
all municipalities bordering the
inlet of North Saanich’s position.

An agreement to provide munic-
ipal water to the Pauquachin
Indian Band has been given third
reading by North Saanich council.
Under the agreement, the band
will pay one-third of the water
main cost, connecting costs and
bulk water fees.

Under the agreement, North
Saanich may extend the water line
along West Saanich Road to ser-
vice properties south of the
Teserve.

schedule was approved by North
Saanich council for July and
August.

North Saanich will hold com-
mittee meetings July 9 and August
13 and council meetings on July
23 and August 20.

A confusing address at 1454
Laurel Road can be changed to
11190 Willow Lane, provided the
post office and fire department
agree, North Saanich aldermen
recommended Monday.

Municipal engineer Igor Zahyn-
acz said the property is on a short
section of Laurel Road which is
not connected to the rest of Laurel
Road and is accessed from Willow
Road. He said the situation could
be confusing for visitors, delivery
people and emergency vehicles.

The owners requested the
address change.

North Saanich council decided
after receiving a request from
residents for the outlet.

Municipal Engineer Igor Zahyn-
acz reported the Greater Victoria
Water District no longer delivers
bulk water and local residents
must use commercial water supply
services. To deliver to homes on
the Peninsula, commercial compa-
nies need a water outlet in the
area.

A central outlet to serve Sidney,
North Saanich and Central Saa-
nich residents would be more cost-
effective than an outlet in each
municipality, Zahynacz said.

Council agreed to request instal-
lation of a metered outlet by the
water commission.
