Sports TheReview Wednesday, June 13,1990 — soeliner back with top showing in international pentathion meet Modern pentathlete Ian Soellner returned from Copenhagen, Denmark last week, satisfied with the best Canadian showing in an international competition. The North Saanich competitor took third place in the Nordic Modern Pentathlon Champion- ships, which drew 27 athletes from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Greece and Canada, June 1-4. “Tn a few events I was weak but in the three main events I did well,’ Soellner said. “Tt was my best point total internationally and my best plac- ing intermationally.” Soellner notched 1,080 points for a three minute, 44 second time in the 300-metre swimming event. In the fencing event he scored 17 victories from 26 bouts to score 958 points. In the pistol shooting competi- tion Soeliner hit 179 of 200 targets ~ to score 955 points. Then, Soellner shone in the riding event, posting the best per- formance of any competitor by clearing all 15 obstacles flawlessly for an award of 1,100 points. Kempf’s Kampf Jack Kempf may have a lot of opponents who don’t want him to win the Social Credit nomination on June 16 for the new nding of Bulkley Valley-Stikine, but his fight for political survival has also gained him new supporters. “Sounds like your opponents are getting desperate with their smear campaign against you,” Karl Oysmuller said in a letter to Kempf. “My wife and I have never been members of any party, but this time we both joined (Social Cre- dit) to support your nomination,” he added. Funding for eight transition houses Funding for eight new transition houses, serving as temporary shel- ter for women and children who are victims of family violence, was announced last week by Carol Gran, minister responsible for women’s programs. The new transition houses, com- prising 100 additional beds, will be developed and managed by registered non-profit societies. There are now 44 emergency shelters and transition houses with a total of 440 available beds oper- ating in British Columbia. “I drew a horse that almost didn’t make it into the competition because of its faults in the prelimi- nary round,” Soellner said. “They were running out of horses and I was one of the last to draw.” | | Athletes draw horses at random and should ride horses in competi- tion that they are unfamiliar with. Soellner finished the competi- tion with 5,183 points, helping the — three-member Canadian team to a “| second-place overall finish. Lawrence Keyte, from Ottawa, placed fifth in the competition while Laurie Shong, from Van- couver, came through with a 13th place showing. Meanwhile, the Canadian wom- en’s modem pentathlon team took home all the marbles, winning first place. 2 Soellner is now preparing for the World Championships in Finland in mid-July, then the Goodwill Games in Seattle in early-August. Locally, a training camp for youths interested in getting involved with modern pentathlon events will be held June 24-26.
