News ThefReview Wednesday, June6, 1990 — A20 News eee ee, Seat belt check aimed at kids Mounties and regional health nurses will comb vehicles at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal Friday, looking for parents who don’t have children buckled up properly. Children being injured in acci- dents because they were improper- ly restrained is a real problem in B.C, and it’s not a case of having the wrong equipment, but using it wrong, officials said. “They are either installing the children into the seat incorrectly or they are using the wrong seat,” said community health nurse Glenda Ashton. She trained four Sidney RCMP auxiliary constables in a four-hour session last week designed to edu- cate the public about proper use of car restraints. Joint sponsor, ICBC, says that only two of every five child safety seats are correctly installed, and in a recent Vancouver clinic, only six per cent of children checked were in properly installed seats. For infants weighing less than 20 Ibs. (9 kg), the seat must be installed facing the rear of the vehicle with the infant hamessed snugly. Gift hot A diamond pendant given by a 16-year-old Sidney youth to his sister shortly after Christmas resulted in the youth’s conviction for possession of stolen property in Sidney provincial court May 24. After leaming a neighbor was missing jewelry, the sister approached the woman, who iden- tified the pendant as one of the missing pieces, crown counsel Edward Ormheim said. Defence lawyer Richard Schwartz said the youth received the pendant from a friend and, although he suspected the neck- lace was stolen, gave it to his sister. The youth was in the neighbor’s home with some other young peo- ple on Dec. 25. Schwartz said police are seeking another of the young people involved. Another necklace and some cas- Sette tapes are also missing from the house, Ormheim said. Judge Stephen Denroche placed the youth on probation for six months and suggested he find better friends. He praised the youth’s sister for her honesty in retumming the necklace. * RCMP. auxiliary constables. With a child seat for persons 20-40 Ibs. (9-18 kg), a tether strap from the seat should be attached to an anchor bolt, attached to the frame of the vehicle. A harness should fit snugly over the child’s shoulders and a lap belt should’ be routed through the seat’s frame. When using a booster seat for children over 40 Ibs. Crown counsel Edward Orm- heim said police, called to an accident at the Ocean Avenue and Lochside Drive intersection, found a car resting on the cement guard Tail. The driver, identified as Michael George Bankes, climbed out of the car and told police he had missed the turn. A breathalyzer test pro- duced two readings of .16 per cent. Bankes pleaded guilty to impaired driving. Defence lawyer Mayland McKimm said Bankes met a friend in a local hotel, had two beer and intended to go home when he met more friends in the hotel and had more to drink before leaving to drive home.
