Tie it and then dye it! Tie dyeing is one of the oldest and most
primitive methods of design printing on fabric, originating in Asia. This
* craft was very popular in the early 60’s and is making a major
| comeback for the 90's. There has been a vast improvement in the
types of dyes available.

Tie dyeing can be combined with other types of fabric printing to
create unique wearable art. Visit Tanners Hobbies & Crafts for a wide
selection of fabric paints, dyes and instruction books. Fabric paints are
now available in various types including glitter, puffy and shiney.

Some of the supplies you will need to get started include small
spray bottles, paper towels, newspaper, rubber bands for tying, paint
t brushes, eye droppers, and a plastic egg carton or old ice cube tray
for mixing colours. Some of the cold water dyes require an additive to
“fix” or set the dye. Good dyes are essential to ensure that all of the
time invested in doing a good piece is worth it.

In tie dyeing there is always an element of surprise. When red and
yellow overlap, orange will result. Yellow and blue make green, etc.
Three colours are usually plenty. Fabric.can be simply tied in knots,
folded and rolled into thin or thick stripes and secured with elastic
bands, crunched, twisted, etc. The techniques are limitless!

Natural fabrics such as cottons and silk are the easiest to work with.
Colours can be vibrant or subtle pastels, depending on your tastes.
