b » Street posts 11-second 100-sprint Sports Peninsula athletes Andrea De Pol and Adam Street qualified on the weekend for the Zone 6 team that will be representing Van- couver Island at the B.C. Summer Games. Both minners posted impressive performances in the Midget class at the Zone 6 trials in Powell River. Street ran an 11-second 100- metre sprint to earn first place in that event. He also won the 200-metre race, with an equally fast time of 22.6 seconds. His hattrick of victories was completed with a first place finish in the 400-metre event, which he ran in 52.9 seconds. Coach Tom Michell said Street is probably one of the top two or three runners in his class in the province and that he should do well at the B.C. Summer Games. Representing the Peninsula’s female athlete contingent on the Zone 6 team will be Andrea De Pol. She earned her berth with a second place finish in the 800- metre event, posting a time of 2:19.3 minutes. De Pol’s fourth place finish in the 400-metre race also helped her to qualify. Her time was 1:01.3 minutes. In action at the B.C. high school championships, Andrea’s older brother, Chad, earned himself a silver medal in the 5,000-metre race. Bantams see-saw to victory In a see-saw game May 28, Peninsula Bantam A lacrosse team beat Juan de Fuca by 11-9. The first period saw Peninsula dominate most of the action but some fine goaltending. by Juan de Fuca’s goalie kept the scoreline down to 3-2 in Peninsula’s favor, coach Burt Minter said. Juan de Fuca gained the upper hand to take the lead by 8-5 by the end of the second period, he added. But Peninsula came back with a vengeance in the final period to score six goals to Juan de Fuca’s one goal, Minter said. Peninsula’s last two goals were scored in the dieing minutes of the game, makinbg the final minutes full of tension. “The skills and teamwork of the A team has much improved since the beginning of the season,” Minter said after the game. Wallace collects in first pro meet Competing in his first ever pro- fessional tournament, Glen Mea- dows golfer Brian Wallace picked up a $1,169 paycheck for his efforts. zi At 21 and the youngest golfer on the Canadian Tour, Wallace tied for 16th place overall among the 144-strong field of dedicated pro- fessionals competing at the Pay- less-Pepsi Open at Gorge Vale. Wallace shot scores of 73, 66, 72 and 73 during the four-day event, which was hampered by rainy and blustery weather conditions. “At the risk of sounding over- confident, I guess I always thought I had the ability to be where I am right now,” a happy Wallace said after the first major tournament of his career. TheReview At the Powell River meet, Sarah Thomber narrowly missed win- ning a place on the Zone 6 team, after she placed third in the 300- metre event. In the Junior Division at the meet, Jeannette Van Den Bulk of Sidney proved she is a track star in the making. Yan Den Bulk, who competes with the Victoria track club, claimed top honors in seven differ- ent events. - She won the 800-metre and 1500-metre events, with respective times of 2:23 and 5:14.3. She also place first in the 400- metre race, with a time of 1:05.1, while she jumped to victory in the long jump, with a distance of 4.35 meters. Van Den Bulk snatched the high jump, too, with a height of 1.39 meters and she won the triple jump, with a distance of 9.90 meters. Top honors in the 200-metre hurdles also went to Van Den Bulk. Other athletes who excelled at the meet. were Matthew Fiander, who finished third in the long jump, and Matthew Baker, who won the 1500-metre event. Building break-in An office building at the CP truck dock at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal was broken into and some articles stolen, sometime between 1-3:30 a.m. May 22, Sidney RCMP said. Heavy damage resulted to locks and doors on the building and police believe the suspects fled on foot, then travelled by canoe to a local island.
