The drug most often chosen by young people is alcohol, Sundburg said. Alcohol is easy to obtain — the average age at which children first use alcohol has dropped to 12 years old, she said. A government survey indicates that one in 10 teenagers is drinking alcohol weekly by grade eight, she added. This survey and evidence of drug and alcohol abuse problems with local youth led to the forma- tion of the Peninsula Substance ~ Abuse Prevention Association, project co-ordinator Roberta Tay- lor said. The project is involved in edu- cational activities and takes an advocacy role monitoring the judi- cial system. The project also iden- tifies advertising which does not promote a healthy lifestyle. Taylor said lobbying for change is an important part of prevention. She urged parents to become active volunteers for the associa- tion. Children in the program receive a booklet, stickers, a bookmark and a balloon as well as the opportunity to enter a final draw. All school children able to read are invited to participate.
