PRIME TIME

had just picked up my mail and returned to

my car, when the truck pulled up beside me. It
was an old beat-up half-ton, wheelwells rusted

out and fenders dented. Ours was an oil town

so I was not surprised to see the household goods

piled high in the back,

windfrayed old tarp.

The driver, a young woman,
climbed out and came around
the front of the truck to speak
to me. She was a little person,
looking scarcely old enough to
be the mother of the three
preschoolers in the cab.

She said they had been on
the road for three days, and
that her husband, working in
the oil patch, had found them
a place to live. She looked
tired, and I could hear one of
the children crying. The trip
couldn't have been very easy
for them. She showed me a
slip of paper with an address
on it, and asked if I could
direct her.

“J hope it’s a nice place,” she
said wistfully, “With a yard for
the kids to play in. They've
been cooped up so long.”

I looked down at the ad-
dress and my heart sank. This
was no cozy house she was
going to, and the only yard
was a truck yard, and not a
safe place for children to play.
With the housing crunch on,
some enterprising individual
had thought to turn a couple
of old warehouses out in the
industrial area into rental un-
its. They weren't nice places.
The buildings themselves
hadn’t been maintained for
ages and the condition of the
units was ample evidence of
the fact. I knew she was going
to be disappointed.

came to the area. I had
thought we were moving into
a nice big farmhouse on the
edge of town. I love old farm-
houses, and for weeks
planned how I would arrange
things. There was a big yard
for the pets, and even lilac
bushes. The kitchen window,
so I had been told, faced east,
and I like that . . . just right
for the rising sun. There
would be room for all my
houseplants. The rooms were
all spacious, and the place,
was only a five minute drive
from town.

I-saw that house constantly
in my mind’s eye. I bought

my colors. At last I would

Moving day came in the
spring. It wasn’t a very nice
day, overcast and cold, but I
didn’t care. Half way to our
destination, the wind got up
and we found ourselves driv-
ing in a blizzard. Even this
didn’t daunt me. The house
was waiting.

Only the house wasn’t wait-
ing. There had been a glitch
and someone else had got the
house, and I found myself
trying to find room in a very
small cold trailer for pets,
houseplants and all the
things I had brought for the
farmhouse. And in my disap-
pointment, I wondered if we
ever had it in the first place or
if it was just a carrot.

I looked at the girl before
me. She too had been expect-
ing a house. And her husband
couldn’t be there to meet her. -
It would be evening before he
got in from the rig. I broke the
news to her as gently as possi-
ble. I didn’t want her driving
past all the tidy houses with
their fenced yards and think-
ing perhaps hers would be the
same.

“Can you tell me how to get
there, please.”

I started to give her direc-
tions, then had a better idea.

“Follow me,” I said, and
started for my car. She looked
relieved, and climbed back in
the cab, quieting the children.
Maybe things wouldn’t be so
bad, I thought. Two heads are
better than one, we should be
able to see twice the potential
in the place. And later, we
could come back to my place
for lunch and let the kids play
in the yard.
