Feature Student fund-raising for Africa trip A Grade 11 student at Parkland Secondary student is joining 15 other British Columbians and six fellow Vancouver Islanders on a trip of a life time. Paxton Downard, 17, is part of the 1990 B.C. Youth Development Tour that leaves Canada July 14 for a six-week development, edu- cational and cultural tour of Afri- ca. “I think it’s important for us to learn about other cultures, espe- cially the cultures of Third World countries,” Downard said. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.” The tour is sponsored by the Save the Children Fund of B.C. PAXTON DOWNARD and is being funded, in part, by the Canadian International Develop- ment Agency's Youth Initiative Fund, by the United Nations Asso- ciation and Capilano College. In addition, each student is required to raise $1,750 from the local community. Downard, a Brentwood Bay resi- dent, is soliciting local businesses and municipal councils in an effort to raise the money. He was selected from about 80 students enrolled in 40 schools on Vancouver Island and the B.C. Interior. At least two students in each of 40 eligible schools applied in April to be part of the educa- tional experience. Downard’s public service record and excellent academic standing assisted in his selection. As a member of the Second Tsartlip Scout troupe for nine years, Downard helped younger scouts and participated in a sal- monoid enhancement project. He completed a Grade 9 leader- ship course and is now a member of the Central Saanich Fire Ven- tures, an arm of the scouting movement. Downard took a positive approach when asked about addressing councils about finan- cial help for his trip. “After all, we are representa- tives of Our communities and our schools,’ he said. While in Kenya and Zimbabwe, the students will visit development projects, supported by government Noteworthy concerts set A series of five chamber music concerts performed by Victoria area professional musicians will be offered Sunday afternoons at Prospect Lake Community Hall on Sparton Road off West Saanich Road. 5 Concerts will be held June 10, 17 and 24 and on July 1 and 8 in the hall.
