But today, we're turning that around. They're scared of what people think now. The environment has been the first issue that scared politi- cians. They now are cottoning to what the people are saying — not too dissimilar to how quickly Russia turned around once the people started to make their mind up.” There are many positive things happening on the en- vironmental front these days, says Ballard. He points to the recent announcement that a local company plans to install a steel shredding plant. There's now a rubber chipping plant in the Kootenays. Stud- ies have shown that up to 50 per cent of all landfill is paper. He said there is every indica- tion that, eventually, all land- fill will be recycled. He said the acceptance of the recent- ly-introduced blue box system is an example of how aware people are already about en- ‘vironmental issues. Cutting down old-growth trees and the clear-cutting of forests will soon be a thing of the past. The government, Ballard predicts, will be forced to clean up poor logging practices because of public de- f aN { Schedule of Events ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL JUNE 2nd - 4th, 1990 SATURDAY, JUNE 2ND: VICTORIA PREMIERE: ISLAND OF WHALES 9:00 PM Island of Whales Introduction: Jack Silberman, Northem Lights Media Corp. A largely self-educated man with only a Grade 12 educa- tion, he has worked a variety of jobs during his time in the labor force. He’s been a deck hand on a fish boat, manager of a grocery store, navigator for an airline, bank worker, travel agency manager and a recreation vehicle park build- er, among other things. He admits to a belief in the free - enterprise system “to a great degree — but I can see where power and the using of people in that system isn’t necessari- ly beneficial to everybody.” It’s clear that Don Ballard doesn’t entirely fit the corpor- ate mould but that doesn’t bother him in the least. “I never even worry about it all. That’s what I’ve had to learn. I think that self- consciousness is probably the — single biggest fault of man- kind today. Everybody’s too worried about what they think other people think of them.” : 1990 CLASSES ARE FILLING UP FAST! EASY! AFFORDABLE!
