Depictions of Buddhist and Christian Hells — The Art Gal- lery of Greater Victoria has just re- ceived a donation of 11 rare oriental scrolls depicting Buddhist hells. Such scrolls were originally used in Buddhist temples to illustrate con- cepts of punishment and served as a warning to converts. The exhibition will be counterbalanced by depic- tions of Christian hells as seen in western engravings, particularly the engravings by Gustave Dore (1833- 1883). Both the Buddhist and the Christian hell depictions show a high artistic quality, but the gruesome nature of the images is not for the faint of heart.
