Sports by Mare Davis The Review Every Tuesday morning, people driving to work along East Saa- nich Road may notice about a dozen sneaker-shoed women working up a sweat, eating up the pavement while training for the next big race. Some 13 women and one man make up the Peninsula Plodders — a group of joggers who run together for fun, fitness and friend- ship. The groups’ organizer, Shirley Eike, says she formed the Plodders in the fall of 1988 as a way of bringing together people who want to get fit, but without the loneli- ness and tedium that usually comes with jogging alone. “It’s very satisfying when we run together. You get more support from each other when you run as a group,” she says. Ages among the runners vary from 20 years-old to 50 years-old but most are in their late 20s to early 30s, Eike says. Starting each workout at the Panorama Leisure Centre, the Plodders typically run for about an hour, covering up to seven and a half miles, she said. Everyone runs at their own pace but a little competitiveness between the runners is always a healthy aspect of the training, Eike adds. Last week the group was prepar- ing for the Pacific Northwest Road Relay Championships, which took place last weekend. The event featured teams from all over the Pacific Northwest and took place on a 130-mile course from Courtenay to Victoria. Each team must field ten run- ners, who will each compete over a six mile distance. Eike admits that some of her team are relative novices but TheReview Wednesday, May 23,1990 — B6 Plodding together for fun, fitness, friendship UNDAUNTED BY THE PROMISE of rain, members of the Peninsula Plodders set out on a training run, accompanied by a pet dog, who is the self-appointed pace-setter. others have tackled half-marathons before. And all of the Plodders com- peted in a recent 10-K run, she said. The Plodders are alternating their training routes each Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for the challenges the championship will offer. We work on speed one day and we work on running up and down hills the next.” Eike would like to see her team put in a “respectable” showing at the race but she does not expect them all to be crowding on to the victory podium. “We're really not that fast but ‘Were really not that fast but we do our best and we're getting there bit by bif BALLS ONLY $1 Ags \ —J | <—So 5 I SPECIAL OF THE wf L PEA POR FAMILY DINNER & ¥ CHICKEN CHOW MEIN |{ ¥ CHICKEN FRIED RICE x aumono cuy owe ¥ TER ERED PAM ¥ PINEAPPLE CHIC = ais KEN "LESS PORK lh ¥CHICKENCHOWMEIN * BEEF CHOP SUEY aa ¥ Serves 4 - 5 persons 7 ONLY $95 A ‘Bayshore FAMILY RESTAU RANT Chinese Serving the Peninsula for over 12 years. Cuisine we do our best and we’re getting there bit by bit.” The Plodders are always in a state of flux because of the year- . round training. Newcomers are always welcome and are not expected to be too competitively oriented, Eike says. “People come and go all the time, especially since we train even in the winter, through rain or snow. But there’s always some new race to train for.” Besides the group’s strong com- mitment to its fitness goals, the Plodders are like an informal club, Eike says. “We're a very sociable group. We support each other in our running but we also go skiing together and arrange lunches.” And in the coming months, motorists on their way to work will likely see more and more Plodders running by as Peninsula residents realize how much fun keeping in shape can be, Eike said.
