In his acceptance speech, Cou- velier promised to “do my very best to live up to your expecta- tions.” He criticized the oppositions “weak-kneed’” attempt to discred- it the government’s latest budget and said “there's no way in the world they can deny the govern- ment reduced the deficit from nine figures.” “We are the only administration in the world that has said we will not spend the profits of privatiza- tion,” Couvelier said. He spoke about business-cycle budgeting and expanded on money the Social Credit government has put aside in a ramy day fund. Then Couvelier went on the attack, inviting delegates to talk about the NDP policy. “There are a number of narrow- issue candidates but it seems the winner could be an ex-union lead- er, Couvelier said. “It would be a great pleasure to carry that debate to the province. “The intrusion into the free marketplace is still their vision — it’s a retread philosophy,” he said. “There is no way the people of this province will embrace this Draft private going ahead Central Saanich council will further consider a draft bylaw that would restrict the height, length and weight of vehicles parked on private property Monday. Sitting at the community ser- vices and legislation committee, council members wrestled with how to determine the maximum size of a vehicle that would be allowed to park on private property in a residential neighborhood. The issue was recently brought before the committee by a petition signed by a number of residents of Skyline Crescent who objected to the parking of a large gravel truck on their street. The owner of the truck,Phyllis Cullis, presented the committee Monday with a counter-petition with 181 names arguing that truc- kers should be allowed to park commercial vehicles in the drive- ways of their own homes. Ald. Ed Hernblad supported Cullis’ argument, saying that neighborhood residents should not be allowed to discriminate against other neighbors’ vehicles merely because they consider them unsightly. “Tn my books there is no differ- ence between a 26 to 28-foot truck to a 26 to 28-foot motor home parked in a private drive. This is not Uplands. This is Central Saa- nich,”*he said. Ald. Wayne Watkins disagreed, saying, “large dump trucks and gravel trucks simply don’t belong in a residential zone.” A, 652-5894 7174 West Saanich The OLD SCRIBE would like to help you with: e Newsletters © Brochures e Flyers & Business Stationary e Great Prices, FAST Service e Recycled paper & card stock available. Arlene Box said that she respected the fact that commercial vehicles do not pose a serious threat to aesthetics of a neighbor- hood but that she did not want to see Central Saanich become a “truckers’ heaven.” Council voted 5-1 to bring the bylaw before a public hearing and to consider it further at the regular council meeting on Monday.
