Cruisers, dinghies, dories, sailboats, speedboats, rowboats, kayaks, ‘canoes, inflatables, debatables: they're out there, year-round, exploring our myri- ad islands and waterways, combing the shores and searching for salmon. The pleasure boats of the Capital Re- gion are among 100,000 based around Georgia Strait. These same waters are cruised each year by another 25,000 American boats. Throughout British Co- lumbia more than 250,000 families own boats: it’s anybody’s guess how many and how often boats from the Interior are brought down to ply the waters of the ssouth coast. On a map of Vancouver Island it’s easy to see what makes our local seas so enticing. The most sheltered and accessi- ble Gulf Islands lie at Victoria’s doorstep. Whether you're the skipper of a luxury yacht or a lowly paddler, dozens of destin- ations are within safe and easy reach of town.
