News * Shoplifter hits local thrift shop A shoplifter who tucked a $29 keyboard under his arm and walked out of the Goodwill Enter- puises thrift store in Sidney ended up without the keyboard and $29 poorer after an appearance in Sid- ney provincial court Thursday. Terrence Parsons, 39, of Victoria pleaded guilty to theft under $1,000. Crown counsel Edward Orm- ~S_heim said Parsons and some friends entered the Goodwill store at about 3:20 p.m. March 23. Parsons left the store with the keyboard, running away when he was challenged by store staff. Parsons was identified by wit- nesses and admitted to police April 2 that he had taken the keyboard. He said he had dropped the keyboard while running away. He told Judge Michael Hubbard that he had been drinking before visiting the store. He walked out with the keyboard because the store was busy and he didn’t want to wait to pay for the item, he said. Hubbard placed Parsons on pro- bation for 12 months, recommend- ing counselling to help the unemp- loyed Parsons find a job. He also ordered Parsons to pay $29 restitu- tion to the store and to do 35 hours of community service work. Gulf Island / route change The schedule for B.C. Ferries’ M.Y.
