Western Economic Diversifica- tion Minster Charles Mayer announced his ministry’s loan to help Micrologix market a dignos- tic kit, which allows salmon far- mers to quickly and inexpensively determine the cause of death in fish stock. Mayer said the test kit is a promising new development as it allows a farmer to make an on-the- spot diagnosis within minutes, which means the spread of the disease can be quickly brought under control. Without the test kit, samples of infected fish tissue have to be sent to a laboratory for analysis — which can take between 24 to 48 hours. While the the findings of the diagnositc kit still need laboratory confirmation, the cost of this pro- cedure is significantly less than the cost for a full diagnosis. With the exception of a firm in Norway, Micrologix is the only other manufacturer of this test kit. Here’s one: Close your eyes and list all the contents of a room in your home. Most people miss quite a bit, which is alright when you’re play- ing a game. But what would hap- pen if you really needed to remem- ber, after a loss due to fire or theft? If you do have to file an insur- ance claim you will need to give an accurate record of what was lost to an insurance adjuster. The adjuster uses this information to assess the extent of the claim and determine the settlement. Few people can remember the complete contents of a room, much less a whole house, espe- cially under the stressful circum- stances that often accompany a loss of this kind. “our independent insurance bro- ker. 4elp. He can advise you on how to mnplete a household inventory and, if necessary, help you fill it out. The household inventory is a room-by-room list- ing of the contents of your home and their approximate value. It is a simple exercise which can usually be completed within an evening. Conducting a household inven- tory will first help your broker determine the appropriate amount of insurance coverage, so that you are not underinsured. Then the completed household inventory acts aS an accurate record of the home’s contents. The information in the inventory should be updated as necessary, at least once a year, and your broker +16 oz. A record of insurance policies and credit cards should be kept with the inventory in a safe place outside the home (such as a safety. deposit box). Many insurance brokers suggest the addition of photos or videos to the household inventory. This vis- ual record can be taken of each room or of any high-value or unusual items. The value of a visual record is best illustrated by an example of a claim which resulted from a bur- glary. The victim had photos on file of her custom-made jewelry so, when the jewelry was stolen, she was able to how the photos to a jeweler who then knew exactly what he had to replace. The poli- cyholder got replacement jewelry very similar to what she had lost, with the least amount of inconven- ience. _In the case of some items of high value such as jewelry your broker may recommend an appraisal in addition to the inven- tory and/or photos. Another way that an accurate inventory can be used is to assist police in identifying stolen prop- erty. For example, one policyhol- der had a record of all the senal numbers of her appliances and stereo equipment which had been stolen. When the goods were recovered, the police were able to identify the items, bring charges against the suspects and return the goods to their Owners: Games are fun when the stakes aren’t too high. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FROM KARIN “AND KEVIN By Echo Eburne MOTHER’S DAY HINTS Mother's Day is only four days away and let’s face it — gifts for that special lady are sometimes very difficult to select. One can only use so much perfume and bubblebath. A Book is an ideal gift because each time it’s used, it's a reminder of her importance in your life. Two books are highlighted in this week's review. Both are aimed at the woman who enjoys creativity around her home. “Better Homes and Gardens New Garden Book” is an up-dated edition of a successful standard that has been in print over the better part of the past forty years. Graced with numerous beautiful color photographs and drawings, the book covers a multitude of gardening aspects, delighting both the beginning and experienced gardener. Charts as well as a climate zone map help give more specific information. “The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Microwave Cookbook” is an inspriation to anyone who cooks. With 500 recipes, step-by-step instructions and color photographs, culinary success is all but guaranteed. The recipes are organized by the amount of time required, which makes it ideal for the working mother. While either of these books would make excellent Mother's Day gifts, Tanners has many alternatives for your selection — all current fiction, plus many classics, non-fiction covering diverse topics such as self-awareness, business, travel, leisure, biographies and more; magazines of every description and for those with eyesight problems, there is also a wide variety of ‘recorded’ book readings on cassette tapes. I’m sure you will be able to find just the right gift for your special lady at Tanners.
