MS group sharing and caring for 14 years

Sharing and caring can help
people cope, the Sidney Multiple
Sclerosis support group has found.
Group members began meeting
continuously in December 1976,
when Jeannette (McNamara)
Hughes, Sue Campbell, Carol
Cree and Jenny Saddlemyer came
together, although some of the
women were meeting on a one-to-

one basis for nearly a year before
the group started.

Specific-disease support groups
were virtually unknown when this
one started. Quite possibly this
was the first Multiple Sclerosis
support group in Canada in which
all members had M.S., Hughes
said.

Highways upgrade plans
before N. Saanich Monday

North Saanich council will meet with Ministry of Highways
representatives at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the municipal hall to hear
the latest plans for the ferry terminal and the Pat Bay Highway

upgrade.

The meeting is open to the public although a restriction allowing
only council members to ask questions was imposed, municipal

clerk Joan Schill said.

Council had requested a public meeting and agreed Monday
night to continue to demand a public information meeting on

ministry plans.

BY-LAW NO. 655

PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that the Council of the District of
North Saanich intends to adopt “Road closure By-Law No. 655,
4990”. This By-Law will close and convey or cause to be conveyed
to Margaret Iris Laing that potion of land in Plan 39615 shown as
“ROAD TO BE CLOSED” and shaded on the diagram below.

A copy of the above proposed By-Law may be inspected at the
Municipal Hall, 1620 Mills Road, North Saanich, B.G., between the

hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 PM. Monday to Friday from April 25,

1990 to May 9, 1990. Objections to the proposed closure and
conveyance must be delivered in writing to the Municipal Glerk,
1620 Mills Road, P.O. Box 2639, Sidney, B.C., V8L 4G1, prior to the

| close of business on Wednesday, May 9, 1990.

Over the years the group has
undergone many changes. Origin-
ally meeting in each other’s
homes, they moved to a number of
different places — a counselling
service, the Panorama Leisure
Centre and various restaurants.

Activities have included
research projects, educational
workshops, a series of speakers,
community activism (a militant
Stage) and socializing. All these
aspects have been present simulta-
neously, but at different times one
or more have been the focus.

Throughout the 14 years there
has always been a basic element of
sharing that gives members the
feeling they are not alone. As well
as the monthly get-together, phone
contact is ongoing.

“Just reach out and someone or
many in the group will try to
help,” Hughes said.

Membership has changed. All
the original members are still
involved except Saddlemyer who
died in 1983. In all, five members
have died, and others have left for
other reasons. At present 21 are on
the phoning list, (one gentleman is
certainly outnumbered!) Usually
16 or 18 attend monthly meetings,

including some spouses. Many -

individuals have gained strength
and courage from the support
group.

Not only do people with M.S.
have to deal with the ups and
downs of their health but, everyday
life crises like raising families,
death of a spouse, separation or
divorce. Some members have had
to cope with the whole spectrum,
while also balancing demands of
work and education. Often just
getting through each day is a
challenge. A sense of humor is a
necessity and this group has lots of
laughs. It helps to have others who
understand.

Many young adults in the Sid-
ney area (as well as others not so
young) will remember helping
with Carnation Day in past years.
Hundreds of North Saanich and
Parklands students and cadets
assisted with this fund-raiser dur-
ing the nine years members of this
group co-ordinated it for the MLS.
Society.

May 11 and 12, volunteers will
be collecting for Multiple Sclero-
sis research by selling carnations
nationwide. The Sidney co-
ordinator is Doug Anderson 655-
1087 or 656-1154.
