Bor in Alberta and educated in Kamloops. and Victoria, Aitkin took her nurses’ training in Great Buitain before joining the nursing service. Upon arriving in Portu- guese East Africa, Aitkin and another nurse were billeted in a convent in Beira. There they discovered the beds had no mosquito netting. The local mosquitoes soon discovered the new blood supply — the two nurses spent a sleepless night slapping at the insects. They travelled by train to their posting in Limbe, Nyasaland (now Malawi) and disembarked to an empty station. Finally they called the hospital and someone soon arrived to meet them. The telegram announcing their arrival reached Limbe a week later. “Tt was during the war,” Aitkin explained. Aitkin spent 15 years nursing in Nyasaland. She nursed at Zomba hospital, then at Blantyre hospital, which served a mixed clientele of Africans, Europeans and Indians. Aitkin purchased some tiny ivory carvings, a few larger pieces and two 30-inch pieces carved from whole tusks. The carvings came with her when she returned to Victoria to continue nursing for another 15 years at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Four years ago the now retired Aitkin decided she had enjoyed the two carved ivory tusks long enough. It was time for the tusks to go home. She donated both pieces to a Save the Children Fund auction, where they raised $1,000. The money was matched by the Cana- dian International Development Agency three-to-one, providing $4,000 towards food supplies for Zimbabwe. “The ivory tusks went back home,” Aitkin declared. Sidney mayor Norma Sealey, who opened the tea, praised the work of the Sidney Save the Chil- Church Services Tea served with glimpses of Africa - dren group: In addition to support- ing Overseas projects, the group also helps Canadian families with twice-yearly shipments of clothes to remote Watson Lake in the Yukon. “No man, or woman, stands so tall as when he or she stoops to help a child,” Sealey said. Over the past year, the Sidney group has raised over $1,400 23 well as organizing the two ship- ments to Watson Lake.
