Weekend art workshops offered Arts workshops will be offered in Sidney next fall by Emily Car College of Art and Design — if residents request the classes. The college outreach program brings the teaching skills of 66 professional artists to communities throughout B.C. “We can bring talented artist- teachers to Sidney for weekend workshops in drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, printmak- ing, color, design, art history and other topics,” said Outreach Pro- gram Director Judith O’Keeffe. “All we need is a local expres- sion of interest and someone to coordinate the events in Sidney,” An updated catalogue listing all artist-teachers and possible work- shops has been distributed to pub- lic libraries and colleges through- out the province. Workshops can be held between Oct. 13 and Nov. 18, 1990, and from Feb. 2 to March 31, 1991. In addition to the workshops, the college outreach program can arrange pre-art college courses or a local artist-in-residence program. Courses in marketing art, portfolio preparation and several visual arts telecourses are also offered. Requests should be submitted to the Emily Carr College of Art and Design or to the nearest college centre by May 15. For more infor- mation, contact the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, 1399 Johnston Street, Vancouver, B.C, V6H 3R9 or call 687-2345, FAX 681-3586. Since the outreach program was introduced in 1979, the college has presented workshops in 154 B.C communities. Continued from Page B3 479-6162. May 6 ART SHOW The Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society presents its annual May Show in Sanscha Hall, comer of Beacon Ave. and DIABETES AUXILIARY Regular monthly meeting of the Penin- sula Diabetes Auxiliary at 7 pm in the clinic lecture room of the Saanich Penin- sula Hospital. Guest speaker is John Ben- ham, hospital’ administrator. Visitors wel- come. North Saanich will not partici- pate in a regional traffic safety commission since a provincial program already exists. Council reaffirmed an earlier motion not to back the new regional district commission after receiving a letter requesting recon- sideration from Allan Lamb of the Insurance Corporation of B.C. traf- fic safety education department. Although council had suspected a referendum would be required under Bill 19 to opt out of the regional district program, Mayor Linda Michaluk said the Ministry of Municipal Affairs is reviewing the legislation and a referendum will not be required. If North Saanich participated in the new commission, the munici- pal contribution would be $2,000 annually, Michaluk said. Council backed Ald. Dee Bailin’s motion to write Lamb confirming the earlier decision. Ald. Rebecca Vermeer disa- greed, saying council should be courteous enough to hear a presen- tation from Lamb first. Ald. Maurice Chazottes said the province already has an efficient traffic safety program. Attempted theft Two radar detectors were stolen and an attempt was made to steal a $16,000 1987 Harley-Davidson motorcycle from a house in the 6700-block Central Saanich Road, police said. The bike had been moved from a carport and was found lying on its side in the driveway, about 9 a.m. April 13, Central Saanich police said. A pair of leather gloves and sunglasses were also taken. The gloves were later found and retumed to the: owner. Police are investigating. FESTIVAL Vanety Festival of the Arts including the | Ideal for single mom with child under . eight.
