It can be said it is not a new situation. To be de- pressed, or to feel inadequate to deal with every day problems is a common every day fact. Why are we this way? Well, there are many reasons — the greatest probably being that we are un- able to keep up with the pre- ssures and demands of every day challenges. As we have said, it has always been so, but today the demand on us weak human beings is tremendous. In this competitive society, in a race for more and more, we collapse under the sirain, and often give up. It won't get any better, in fact only worse. New cars, new homes, new:clothes, vacations, etc., credit and its ensuing burdens cause many to collapse and lose their sense of direction and go into depres- sion. There is a cure, if only we would accept it. Very few will go to the word of God for direction in their lives; before any depres- sion is there, thus eliminating quite a bit of unnecessary stress. But when there is stress and depression we can still go to the word of God for comfort and direction. David, the Psalm- ist, in Psalm 34:4 says “I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears.” David was one, who because of his faith, knew where to go for help and relief to bear the prob- lems of life. Verse 6 — This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his trouble.” There is no difference today. God is always ready to listen to us in our feelings of emptiness and the inability to cope. Verse 8 says “O taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” Bible reading is a posi- tive relief from todays stresses and tensions, plus God’s word is a directive and a teacher. Great comfort can be found in Psalm 40:1. “I waited patiently for the Lord, he brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the mirey clay, and set my feet upon a rock.” There are many who find help and strength in the reading together the word of God. Why not enjoy this pleasurable expe- rience, it will help whatever stresses and depressions you experience. Interested in a Bible reading class?
