Tree cuiting will cost Unauthorized cutting of trees on North Saanich public property will carry a penalty under a new policy backed by council’s plan- ning, zoning and parks committee April 23. Anyone cutting a protected tree will be required to compensate the district for the costs involved in obtaining the largest tree of the same species locally available, shipping the tree, site preparation, planting the replacement tree and maintaining the new tree for three years. The tree-cutter will also be assessed a cost for the loss of an amenity in the community. The policy covers trees in North Saanich’s 120 kilometres of road right-of-way, 15 kilometres of lin- ear park, 100 beach accesses and 13 major parks.
