There, standing on the porch, much to my astonishment, was the Muse. In her hands she held a laurel wreath. She grinned male- volently and placed it squarely on : my head. “Good luck sucker,” she said. So writes Bill Richardson in his book Canada Customs, explaining how he came to be Canada’s self-proclaimed poet laureate. Tonight at the Central Saanich library, Richardson will bring his muse-inspired wit to a reading in honor of the 1990 national book festival. Ani author, entertainer, humorist and raconteur, Richardson is heard on CBC Radio’s Vicki Gabareau Show. He published his first book of droll recollections, musings and quibbles in 1988. In keeping with the tone of his book, his presentation is aimed at the funny bones of adults. Everyday Canadian pastimes, peeves and pleasures will be pre- sented in a new Satirical light by Richardson. The free presentation is co- sponsored by the Friends of the Central Saanich Library and by the Vancouver Island Regional Library. Richardson’s reading will be held starting at 7:30 p.m. in the TheReview cultural centre, activity room A, 1225 Clarke Road, Brentwood Bay. All are welcome to attend. A MALEVOLENT MUSE is blamed for the laurel wreath on author Bill Richardson’s head, shown on the cover of his first book, Canada Cus- Toms. ARE YOU COMFORTABLE?
