A powerhouse of its time, a
1902 link belt locomotive crane,
was retired to the grounds of the
Saanich Historical Artifacts
Society earlier this month.

The 75 ton steam crane was
donated to the society by Fletcher-
Challenge in Victoria, after the
Gorge Road mill was closed.

“Cranes similar to this were
used in the construction of the
Panama Canal and also to pull
ships through the canal,” said
society president Art Gardner. A
steam shovel could also be
attached to the crane. .

The crane’s steam engine both
operated the crane and moved the
entire unit back and forth along a
standard railway track. With the
crane came the original instruction
book from the Link-Belt Speeder
Corporation of Cedar Rapids,
Towa.

A $4,000 B.C. Heritage Trust
grant has been approved for the
moving and restoration of the
crane and a recently acquired
CNR flat car.

Gardner estimated moving, re-
assembling and painting the crane
will cost $2,500 plus $2,500 worth
of volunteer labor. Moving, re-
decking and painting the flat car
will use the remaining $1,500.

Eventually the crane will be
restored to operating condition,
Gardner said. But the first job is
Te-assembling the unit, which had
to be taken apart before it could be
moved.

The last two sections of the
crane, each weighing 32 tons,
arrived on the society grounds
April 10. The main section is now
on a temporary track, where the
entire unit will be re-assembled
before being moved to a perma-
nent display site.

“There’s quite a bit of work
ahead of us yet,” Gardner said.

The society plans to put the
crane with the CNR railway flat
car and a B.C. Rail caboose on a
length of railway track at the north
end of the property. The caboose is
now the head office for the Van-
couver Island Model Engineers,
who operate their scale model
trains on the Society's 28-acre
property.

The old style CNR flat car was
the last piece of rolling stock to
leave the Cowichan Bay area,
Gardner said. The car has already
been sandblasted and painted.

The society has also obtained a
Fairmont speeder which is await-
