Sports TheReview Wednesday, April 25, 1990 B5 Winning sireak ends for Magic Colour Peninsula Magic Colour’s win- ning streak came to an end last weekend as the local team lost 5-1 to South Arm in the finals of the Division 6 (under 12) of the Coas- tal Challenge Soccer Cup. Playing in Nanaimo, Colour’s championship hopes were dashed by a Richmond-based team which was voted the best team of the toumament. In the first half, South Arm’s players showed their talent early on. Only a few minutes into the game, two of the team’s speedy forwards broke through the middle and outran the Colour’s defence to fire the ball into the back of the net. After recovering from this early disappointment, Colour came back. For the next 15 to 20 min- utes, the home team had the Majority of the run of play but was unable to score. A late second goal by South Arm sealed the fate of the match. In the second half, Colour pre- ssured the opponents but was una- ble to capitalize on the scoring opportunities. Conversely, Sala- mon Arm beat the Colour aoe three more times. Colour’s only goal of the game came after midfielder Chris McDonald was dragged down in the penalty area after a promising run. He made no mistake with the penalty kick. Darrell Underwood, Lee Dry- den, Gus Morris and McDonald all produced some great scoring Opportunities but their finishing was not up to their usual standards. Winger Underwood was voted Colour’s most valuable player. Peninsula Magic advanced further in these coastal playoffs than any previous team in Penin- sula Soccer Club’s history. Coach John McDonald said he is proud of his players’ season and of what they have accomplished. Panthers playing competitive soccer In a hard-fought game, the Park- land Panthers girls’ soccer team was beaten 4-1 by by a far more experienced Claremont Senior Girls’team last Thursday at Iro- quois Park in Sidney. The Panthers played a solid defensive game in the first half against a more skillful and much stronger Claremont side. With a minute away from half- time, Jenny Milligan opened up the scoring with a goal for the home team Panthers. But the visitors drew level seconds later with a well-earned goal to the credit of Lisa Kirken- dale. In second-half action, the run of play was not so one-sided as the Panthers’ aggressive style of play won them more control of the ball. But the outcome was never in doubt and Claremont fired home three more goals. Lisa Kirendale scored a second and tho other TILL OCTOBER 22, 4990 scorers were Denise Moore and Kathy Stothard. The Panthers’ coach, Joe Milli- gan said his team’s inexperience was apparent but he was happy with the players’ gritty determina- tion. “It’s our first girls’ team in several years and most of the girls are only in grade nine and ten. So we did well to hold our own,” he said. In earlier league action, the Panthers lost 2-0 to the Mount Douglas Senior Girls’ team and they also suffered a 5-1 defeat to the division’s powerhouse, the Oak Bay Beavers.
