When students from Ecole
Saint-Pierre school in Quebec
arrive in Central Saanich next
month one thing will be familiar
— the hawk logo of Mt Newton
Middle School.

A carved and painted wooden
plaque of the logo, created by
Sidney artist Allan Porter, was
presented to Ecole Saint-Pierre
school last fall by visiting Mt.
Newton students.

In the first-half of the exchange,
39 Met Newton grade eight stu-
dents in the French immersion

Quebec City and attended classes

until May 1.

“Tt was an extremely stimulat-
ing experience for most of them,”
said parent coordinator Alison
Gardner The exchange gave the
students a chance to speak French
daily, both in school and outside
school hours.

Until the trip, most of the stu-
dents had only spoken French in
the classroom, Gardner said.

The Quebec students will come
to Central Saanich from May 10 to
17 for the second half of the
exchange.

exchange was covered partly by
parents, partly through fundraising
and partly by a $150 per student
federal grant.

The Mt. Newton students were
accompanied by teacher Laurent
Auger and by three parents.
