S es a= +. L 4 Busimess The Review Wednesday; April 18, 1990 — B9 Words of wisdom from one son fo another Our son is now an adult. He has just celebrated the birthday which the government has decreed to be his age of majority. I considered giving Matt some words of financial wisdom that he could treasure so when he became successful, he could say: “I owe it all to the advice my father gave me” — you know the sort of thing. But then I re-read the words my father had written to me when I reached the age of majority. They expressed feelings I had always treasured over the years. And I decided I could give my son nothing more valuable at this point in his life than the letter my father wrote to me. My. birthday fell on a Sunday that year, so I had’ celebrated the event by going out on a date Saturday night to a club to hear Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong strut his trumpet stuff. When I returned home (1 still lived with my parents while com- pleting my studies), my father had left the following letter for me on the kitchen table. It was dated Feb. 17, 1962, 11 pm. ‘| decided | could give my son nothing more valuable at this point in his life fhan the letter my father wrote fo me.’ “Dear Michael,” he wrote. “In an hour from now you will be an adult — according to the law of the land — and my very best wishes accompany you on your journey into this new phase of your life. “You can imagine that I have been thinking of you more than usual lately, and I am glad that all my thoughts result in a feeling of great confidence in you and your future. “T know you will do your best to make your life a success. “Success seems to come easily to you, at least initially. To turn this into something that will give you lasting satisfaction, you will have to work hard; you are now old enough to realize this. I know he would have been proud of his grandson, and pleased that his words have spanned the two gener- ~ ations. By preserving them, you can still enjoy their beauty long after they would have only been a memory. With summer being a popular time for graduations, weddings and anniversaries, you could consider the art of flower drying. There are several methods of preserving flowers, but the most inexpensive and efficient method that | have found is by using silica gel crystals. They can be used over and over again for years of dried flower enjoyment. All you will require are flowers, silica gel, air tight containers and an oven to rejuvenate the silica gel (after use). Most flowers, depending on their thickness, dry within 2 - 4 days and will retain their colour quite well. Flowers with thicker petals such as the camellia may take a day or two longer to dry. Other flowers, with very thin petals, such as daffodils will dry very quickly and are only suitable for putting in a display bowl as they become very limp and do not hold their shape very well. Dried roses and carnations look as if they haven't been dried at all! And they only take a couple of days to dry, depending on their size. Any flower that is to be dried, should be picked in its prime for maximum beauty. It is also important in our West Coast climate to spray the flowers, once they are dry, with a clear acrylic matte finish so that moisture from the air does not ruin them. Good luck with preserving your future memories. PART TWO OF THIS COLUMN WILL APPEAR NEXT WEEK. TANNERS Hebbies & Crafts 3rd & Beacon 656-4748 GARY L.
